I am normally not very critical and had thought that the warnings about the odor could be possibly been subjectively somewhat exaggerated.
No, they were not.

The Steering Wheel Cover stinks really pathetic. This pungent chemical smell transfers to the touch, even on the hands. Despite airing, wash and re-aired no improvement.

It's a shame, because the reference does look and feel a very good impression. But something has gone horribly wrong as well in manufacturing.
