Graphics:
The observer immediately notices that the entire world of Limbo presented in a unique graphic style that produced an incredible effect. Forget all cold colors, forget all the warm colors! All we need is a lot of black, here and there a touch of white and discreetly anything that is to be settled in the gray area. That may sound like a purist, but the developers have managed to create, despite or perhaps because of scarce presentation this incredible feeling that you have when you play Limbo. Through increased attention to defocus effects, scary scenes and a little boy as the main character you create here more than such other 08/15 high-end graphic games. But back to the beginning: We were stopped while running (Hah, paradox!)
Gameplay:
So we run, how it should be for a 2D game, very classic from left to right. Sometimes we make a detour up or down, but in principle, the path is always specified. But to deny this, is not always easy. After the first few steps on childhood through tall grass (without Pokemons!) We are faced with a deadly Pfählfalle in the way. This one can still safely skip, but it gets tricky after a short time. And especially macabre! Limbo has received a USK-16 release, the PEGI even skin 18+ out. Despite the mentioned black / white graphics Limbo is extremely detailed in the death of our main little protégé. We grope for example inadvertently in one of lying about bear traps, then separates the little boy in all the finest manner the head from the body. Died (Accompanied by splashing fountain of blood and yummy noises) So is around every corner. How do you like the boys prefer? Decapitated, impaled, cut up, crushed, shot? Yes, everything was available! Macabre is a top priority in Limbo! In many places it is even provided that it is the first attempt, only to think only the 2nd time: "So now I make it better" Here is the solution of some puzzles that are in failure usually fatal, not always obvious, so you get in some places, especially from the 2nd third of the game to ponder. The higher then, however, the joy if you packed it on a specific location. (Unfortunately, there are also always corpses of children who were not as smart and now in the area hang ;-)) but traps and puzzles are not in the dark nightmare world the only thing that would stop us ...
The Opponents ":
Although one has the constant feeling that the whole world around you would prevent a further run on, but in some places spits limbo particularly nasty creatures ... just in the 1st period of the game (the nice wood ...) get we are dealing with the personified Nemesis. This has (at least at the beginning * Augenzwinker *) 8 long legs and seek us so many places for life. Since our little nameless boy but is completely "naked", in terms of armament, only helps to run away in the first place. As if that were not enough, there is now and then other kids who want us inexplicably to the collar. Some throw burning tires, while others shoot arrows at us ... well here helps only clever dodge. However, quite crafty are little fireflies. Yes, you read that right! Every now and then you think of adult Glühwurm limbo on his head and bites tight. The problem is that these vile beasts always run only in a certain direction then one. Preferably directly into a deadly trap. "Defeat" can these fireflies only when one arrives at a kind of feeding proboscis. This single friendly "nature" hanging down from the ceiling and soon the boy runs under them, they will eat the fireflies on. So should be! Evil fireflies! Let us now so quickly away from these evil creatures and deepen once the mystery ...
The physics puzzles:
Main element in Limbo is solving numerous physics puzzles. Believe it or not, but Limbo has a very impressive physics engine, which mainly operates very realistic. Current physics has to do now to help solve, and with it the mystery of the players. From simple box-pushing to more complex puzzles: The physics always plays a major role. The puzzles themselves are well thought out and the environment has to be well observed, to discover the solution. The solution is sometimes rather curious. So you have for example a frog hiding in a column, lure out and drive him into a kind of hamster wheel, which in turn then drives a machine that changed the weather, so it rains. Then leaves a hollow fill with water from the gutter and can be seen on the other side. Hats off! Later in the game you have to then even gravity itself manipulate, to solve puzzles. So here at this point, kudos to the developers for this inventiveness! But there is more to praise ...
The Mood:
Whether gloomy forest, a dark factory or a deserted town ...
The atmosphere that is created in Limbo is as close as a group of young people to a free beer action at the weekend. (Only without the hangover afterwards. I promise!) As so often said, the graphic style makes a decisive part of the mood of the game. The other part makes the soundscape, because that is really depressing like an elevator with ten people the brand Ottie Fischer. Especially since it is a soundscape really. Because Limbo does not need any background music. Crickets, machine noises as loud hissing or shrill whistle and menacing rumble in the distance are the constant companion sounds in the 3 hour journey of the little boy.
Playing time, Achievments and interpretation:
Yes, this is for many probably the only criticism. Because as soon a Limbo draws in his fangs, as soon it is over. Talent is 1/2 2 - 3 hours, others are more busy 4 hours Limbo. That's too bad, because just as an ingenious game would not have hurt a couple more hours of play. (Assuming they would have been just as good as the current hours), but you should not let the short duration of the game off. Because the game is played through quickly, but so far out of my head. Firstly it freezes only because of the presentation in mind. Second, there are many hiding spots to find eggs in the game that unlock each one Achievement. Replayability is given in any case, perhaps because of the short playing time. It is also important to be mentioned that due to the lack Storyinszinierung, yes generally due to any non-existent "Developer comments" (cutscenes, dialogue, Intro, etc.) Limbo offers a lot of room for interpretation. I think everyone has their own idea of what exactly the plot of Limbo and what wants to tell us the game.
To content of Collecters Edition:
Whether a 3D mode makes for a 2D sidescroller sense, I doubt it ... but the packaging and the additional material look very nice and the box looks good as a collector's item in addition to other games. The additional cost pure download version so you can pay safely. After all, you invest in a modern classic!
Last words:
It should be noted that even the "normal" fireflies floating around in the woods can be fatal. My first experience with them, I run through the grass, übsersehe the trap that lies on the ground, because I look at the fireflies. "Oh, they're not that great?", I think and step directly into the trap ... I like Limbo since no more fireflies ... who are evil!
