Suunto Ambit3 Black Peak (Hr) (Sport)

Customer Review

Device

The packaging is good, and the shows which features sturdy and durable materials priori. The rubber strap is pleasant to touch, and easy loop around the wrist. The strap is provided with two clips which snap into the holes. This is the kind of detail that can go unnoticed but which is seen.
The watch is thick, so imposing and is of course not for a permanently port outside outputs or any other sports session.

Package output, it requires a recharge via a USB connection and a PC side connection "house" type clamp very well designed.
The update of the watch requires prior installation of Moveslink2 sync software, downloadable from the site Suunto.

Synchronization

Installation of the utility Moveslink2 is mandatory to configure the watch Movescount via the web service.
All settings are available either on the watch, and it can be customized in terms of display by activity.
The displays offered by default, however, are well chosen.

The synchronization of the watch with the user account on the site Suunto / Movescount is fast.

Once the account is created, the utility installed, connected and watch, updating the camera's firmware is started. Everything is pretty fast, reliable.

Any updates on the Movescount account of the user made after synchronization of the watch via Moveslink2 will be a manual sync.
It will not be automatic. This is not a problem, but it would have been better to offer a sync button directly on the site. This is what I had already noted with sync Polar Flow.

What is disappointing, but really! is an obligation to connect the watch via USB to the PC to synchronize.
Suunto Why did he not foresee the possibility of doing it via Bluetooth? Especially since the wireless connection is possible with products iOS (iPad, iPhone).
For platforms as Android, Suunto Announces Future Deployment without giving a date.
I find this totally exclusionary practice for thousands of Suunto users.
This is exactly the same approach adopted by Polar !!! Garmin makes it better?!?! ....

Use

The configuration is performed and shows recharged, I tested the watch mountain biking, running, bodybuilding and treadmill.

For each subject, you can manually set 8 screens of information that can be viewed in session! Each screen is limited to 3 information at once, but it is possible to scroll.

Cycling: it is certain that without pedaling his dashboard on the hanger is not what there is of better. The hanger adapter is sold separately, about 15 EUR, which is 2 times more expensive than the Polar bracket. This media is against very easy to use since snaps. I also use the handles of the treadmill.
Information remains very readable wrist that does not support (it is possible to reverse the black and white contrast).
The buttons respond easily, which facilitates scrolling screens during the session.
Moreover, I note that the GPS hangs very quickly, cloudy days.
The barometric module seems high bill (for the model thus Ambit3 Peak).

Running: the watch is very readable, but is impressive. So the buttons are quite salient very accessible during the race.

Treadmill: same as running except I used the support for not having the wrist and to have cardio under the eyes.
The accelerometer is good enough, but I see a difference of 15% between the distance displayed by my carpet and that calculated using the accelerometer of the watch.

Extra point: it is a pity that the watch does not propose shaker (see end of article why ...)

For hiking trips, I will test this winter (compass, routes, waypoints).

Programming shows

With this watch, it is possible to have before any kind of information adapted to a given activity (GPS, altimeter, itinerary, Allure, Speed, Heart, etc ...)
This is a real monster. But.
But who wants to follow a specific and relevant, it will be almost prohibitive to have to install additional apps.
For this there are a Suunto community that offers via Movescount, a bunch of applications.
But beware, not all are relevant, and you'll need (within forums or take advantage of practitioners who know good tips ...) to try a few before you find the right application.

Another way to customize his watch is to create self applications via the App Designer service offered on Movescount.
This requires some programming basics, and I must admit that the "small development environment" is far from satisfactory.
There are a lot of bugs, and you will need to be patient to exit the application you crave on your watch.
For more crispantes: variable declaration system, inability to implement iterative loops (knowing that all the lines of code runs live every second on the clock ...), presence an instruction to turn on the light, but the lack of education for the disable, etc. etc.
By cons, there are a large number of internal variables used on just about every physical, physiological and geographical.

To give you an example of what he can do, I have developed an application that alternates every second, the heart rate and the percentage associated with the so-called Karvonen approach.
The information is prefixed with the name of the corresponding cardio zone (z1, z2, z3, z4 and z5).
When the heart rate reaches address the Superiore, the watch will beep 1 time / sec for 5 seconds with the light comes on.
If the heart rate drops below the offset, the watch beeps autiomatiquement 1 time every 2 seconds for 6 seconds (3 times).
This lets me know where my cardio without looking at my watch.
That is why I would have liked a vibrating alarm to enjoy it when I practice my work in music! ...

Not yet tried: programming with consideration of geographic data ...

ADDITIONAL COMMENT added 04.24.2015:
=============================================
I wanted to add a few comments after 4 months of use about (cycling, running, walking & treadmill).

1. Using the watch
===================
As I said in my initial comment, the watch provides all essential information for all activities and I am really satisfied.
One point that bothers me is the lack of réguièrement sensitivity button at the bottom / right, on which I must insist a little more than others (this may be a manufacturing fault, but I do not wish for that guarantee sollliciter ).
Another point for the programming of a customized application (I always use), I have not programmed others, the development interface is not really friendly.
The GPS grip and chest strap is really fast, I never had any problems.
I also regret the lack of a "ghost" mode that would stall an output on the basis of a reference move and be able to visualize in real time the current progress vs. the ghost.

2. Using Movescount interface
============================
I have a very mixed review.
I used my watch almost daily during the Christmas holidays, in running background work. So I needed to know the evolution of my perfs, my physical condition.
But it fell during the big crash Movesocunt that lasted SEVERAL DAYS. A huge blunder on the part of Suunto at the limit of amateurism in terms of responsiveness to re-established in the service. It's a shame.
Moreover, sometimes problems (bugs) synchronization of the watch with Movescount via Moveslink2 blocks the update of moves.
However, Suunto offers regular firmware updates.

What is nice with Movescount, and I really appreciate:
================================================
--- # The ability to create a path / way in the Routeplanner tool, integrating waypoints and transfer them into the watch.
It is a pleasure to follow his path in output, with waypoints that activate automatically, management etc.
For example, I Plan A-> C ride through the WP B. output, starting from A, the watch displays the name of me B (next WP on the route), the direction of B via a chevron on the periphery of the dial, and the remaining distance to reach B.
B Once passed, the WP C which is activated on the watch, etc.
We can choose at the outset one of WP's WP intermediate course if not interressent us.

The inability to scroll the screen with the route other screens bother me. This forces me to repeatedly press Right / Center.

# --- What is nice, besides the fact that every move recorded in Movescount contains all the information, is the ability to display in the graph the evolution of basic parameters (heart rate, speed etc ...) as the custom settings you have defined in the apps home.
Example, if I developed an app in which I calculate in real time among my cardio zone 5 (z1, z2, z3, z4, z5) and although I will find the evolution of this information in the chart.
--- # Finally export of moves in several format is appreciable (KML, GPX, tcx ...)

3. Compatibility with Android systems
================================
For users with no iOS system, like me, it is impossible to have an automatic sync, wireless via Bluetooth Smart, the watch with its online Suunto Movescount account.
From what I've read, a deployment is announced in late April. To be continued.
