Since I my programs (and data) would not have scattered tens of different computers and I in the subway have no desire unfold my laptop and so cramped as to sit so it does not slip from the womb, I therefore have my 2 Surface Pro with 8 GB RAM and 256 SSD fetched. Home, office, at the customer site I close the Surface via Mini DisplayPort to an external monitor and use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard in order as usual on the Windows Desktop to work. Then appears on the screen of the Windows desktop and on the Surface display will continue to run the touch surface. There, running my Messenger (I recommend IM + Pro) with Skype & Google Hangouts while the right applications can be seen on the desktop.
Travelling in public transport I use the Surface as a pure tablet with touch operation. Simply pull out of my pocket, click the power button and after a few seconds, the Windows 8.1 Touch surface visible. Works flawlessly this workflow, you just have to understand and not equal to a flat rate demonize the new interface of Windows 8 just him.
I especially like the front installed Windows Mail Touch app, Evernote touch and customized Internet Explorer 11. Prefer yet the desktop use on the 10.6 "screen, then I use the supplied stylus pen. Here it considers this not very good in the magnetic holder, which is why you have to watch these fit. Thanks to the integrated Bitlocker disk encryption, the device can be stolen without great harm to me.
The following applications I use on my Surface Pro 2, which is also a variant with 4 GB of RAM would be enough:
- Office 365
- Visual Studio 2013
- VMware Player (Windows XP, Mac OSX Mavericks - works just fine, even with Xcode!)
- Evernote
- Norton Internet Security 2014 (amazing on resources)
- Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Edge Tools, Acrobat Pro, Illustrator)
- Java 1.7 SDK (IntelliJ IDEA, WebStorm, Adobe CQ5)
- My DATEV client with Citrix
What do you expect also different, it's also a full-fledged Windows installed 8.1 Pro and the hardware corresponds to a Ultrabook. The only thing that had yet bothered me at the beginning, that was not existing UMTS / LTE module. Since I use my Surface to 95% only in offices with existing Wi-Fi and I can go to connect it with the Hotspot my iPhone, which is now no longer a problem for me. Even the train and various coffee sweatshops now offer a WLAN.
If that surface is too expensive, which may also recently published Dell Venue 8 "or 11" display purchase. However, this has only 2GB of RAM. For Office and most applications this is completely sufficient.
