After several weeks, I can now say it was worth it. Looking at the first RAW's in the camera screen it turned still a bit sobering one, but on the computer monitor gave way immediately.
Especially compared to the pictures of my "old" zooms, the already 15 year old EF 24-85 3.5-4.5, that looks really old here in comparison. Not only visually, but also from the mechanical processing and the glasses are here years, worlds and classes apart.
The 24-70 4 L stands very sharp and detailed from, at maximum aperture already sufficient dimmed until deep into the edges. From the image quality occurs in the peripheral areas do not quite match the 24-70 2.8 L II zoom, but here I would like to again bring the price into play, for The latter I had the 2.5 - to almost 3 times the price (almost 2100 - have to shell). This saved I invest rather be back in prime lenses.
Useful also the macro function, here too, the lens does not come indeed to the performance of my macro prime lens zoom, but the image quality is superior to all cases and adequately the use of a zoom.
IS I just use the built-in borderline situations, but here he makes me even at 70 mm focal length sharp images with 1/10 or 1/15 second exposure time. This IS is just interesting for photographers who use their DSLR also for films and achieve blur-free clips without a tripod.
So I use it for reports always two full-housing, now one with the mentioned lens and the second with my beloved EF 80- 200 2.8 L "Magic Drainpipe" which has the optical quality of a fixed focal length. So I have almost covered the whole range of 24-200 mm BW.
Finally, let me say again: light intensity is important to me especially when prime lenses. A good zoom with IS, I can get over the initial opening of aperture 4 as the lens otherwise in all areas is a sovereign optical performance. The excellent workmanship and in the meantime good price-performance ratio have led to the "zoome" again. The 24-70 4 L can be almost anything, and at a fairly high level. Actually I wanted to buy a longer zoom - really.
