Breaking News: firmware bug solved in relation to the daylight saving time by firmware 1:36!

I. Information on the purchase decision

1. For whom the device is not about and for whom?

a) The benefits of equipment are eg
- Relatively easy to use the basic functions (if the special functions to be used, it is however quite complicated, see manual)
- Play DVD, Blu-Rays (also in 3D), music, photos, videos, (in AVCHD and directly from the SD card on the camcorder / camera 'through built-in SD card reader)
- The ability to burn videos to DVDs or Blu-Rays (also AVCHD DVDs)
- The possibility of TV programs and Aunahmen to stream via app and WiFi to smartphones or tablets,
- The possibility of TV programs on DLNA-enabled devices to stream (for example to another TV in a rough, no TV connection; works great with Panasonic devices, see below)
- Retrofitting of smart TV functions, HbbTV and DLNA media streaming for its own TV (if the TV is not yet able)
- Very good picture and sound quality in SD and HD.

b) What the unit can not / what is not good:
- The EPG is quite primitive and the ease of use far worse than the EPGs of most HDD receiver and loads program data often does not automatically (see below)
- The ease of use is achieved through a number of restrictions, for example, the device holds (unlike many Linux Receiver, but like any brand devices) are all DRM restrictions, worse: it adds these limitations still some added own nonsensically,
- Retrofitting of functions there (unlike Linux receivers) not, updates are only for error correction, but new functions via Web Apps (network services) can come to,
- Streaming / Remote programming do not always completely reliable.

c) Conclusion
- Who wants a in the basic functions easy to use HDD recorder that can also burn DVDs and Blu-Rays, has little alternative.
- Those who want to burn DVDs or Blu-Rays, is better off with a modern HDD Receiver with contemporary EPG and a BD player.
- Who does not like DMR restrictions and is willing to join hineinzufuchsen in the complex operation of these devices, will be a Linux Receiver (Dreambox, VU + etc.) happier.

TIP: The manual can be downloaded as PDF files from the Panasonic website.

2. Model differences of the current generation of devices (730/735/835)

- BST = SAT dual tuner (2 ports), BCT = DVB-C / DVB-T twin tuner (1 connection, either DVB-C or DVB-T); an analog cable tuner has not the BCT!
- 735/835 silver, 730 = black
- 835 = 1 TB, 730/735 = 500 GB (500 GB = 212 hours SD or 76 hours of HD uncompressed DR-quality)
- Otherwise, all the functions of all devices the same.

3. Differences with the previous generation (820/720/721)

The changes to the previous generation are quite manageable.

a) Hardware
- Only one SCART socket available (In). No SCART out more (also unnecessary)
- Where once Scart Out sits, now the WLAN antenna protrudes slightly out of the housing
- Supports hard drives in NTFS format
- A more casual look
- Certainly changes in the inner life

b) Software

- Remote Recording, ie recording programming per app / browser on the Internet
- Miracast-capable (via WLAN), that reflect the screen of Android smartphones or tablets on the TV screen. Works very well.
- Wifi-Direct, ie connection with other Wi-Fi Direct devices without going through a wireless network.
- 4D upscaling (ie four times full HD). This is still more the future, of limited value, because 4D media (eg RedRay discs) can not play the instrument.
- Display of station names in the recorder display (which has only six characters, but name run through)
- Optical revising the title menu and some (but not all) other menus (some more app design as lists design).

TIP: The new features will remain exclusive. Firmware Updates for earlier generations, upgrade the features, it has never happened before at Panasonic.

4. Do I need another smart card / another CI + module?

Basically no.

- For Free-TV channels (ARD, ZDF, RTL, SAT1, etc.) in SD, with ARD / ZDF / arte also in HD you need for some time (at least in the cable) neither CI card still SmartCard more.

- Who, other channels (. Ie pay-TV channels including private HD channels) will take, but has only a CI module with smartcard in TV, these plugged into the recorder. The recorder can then record everything. The TV can be used without the recorder only free TV, but one can use the tuner of the recorder for the other stations.

- Both the recorder tuner sharing a CI module and a smartcard. The second CI slot is available only in the event that you want to use two different smart cards from different vendors simultaneously (eg cable Germany and Sky).

- Who has been indeed a smart card, but not a CI module, has to acquire the latter, if he wants to use the smart card in the Panasonic.

- Only those who have a different recorder, receiver or TV, with which it wants to regardless of the Panasonic recorder receive all channels, needs a mandatory additional smart card and possibly another CI module and must reposition the map.

- While the recorder records without smartcard on encrypted channels. But a later decoding (by subsequent replugging the Smartcard) works (at least for me) not.

5. Which media should I buy this?

It function, among other things
- BD-RE (25): 2x TDK, Verbatim 2x
- BD-R (25): TDK 4x; Panasonic 4x, 6x;
- BD-R (50): Panasonic 4x
- DVD-RW Verbatim (2x, 4x, 6x)
- DVD-RAM Panasonic 2-3x

Please note: AVCHD DVD set the DVD-R format ahead (with DVD + R is not).
I will test gradually various DVD and Bluray blanks, but would be grateful for your feedback by commenting on the model (BD-R manufacturer X works / does not work). I collect the then here in the review, which I will continue to expand.

6. What accessories do I need (except DVD / BD)?

a) The device comes with an HDMI cable. So be sure to order, if not available.
b) Another useful feature is a USB extension cable (eg AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable (1 meter)), because the rear USB socket is difficult to reach.
c) for BCT: In interference possibly helps a coaxial cable with sheath current filter for about 5 euros.
d) for BST: Who has only one satellite cable, need possibly a Destacker / Satelite router to split the order, if you want to simultaneously record two channels (see discussion thread for BST)..

II. Installation

1. The unit is amazingly small and light (see photo BCT 730). The stand-sticker on top of the device stuck so hard that I was afraid to damage the device during Removal. But goes off without residue and without damage.
2. There are FB, batteries, printed manual (no longer a matter of course) and the antenna and power cord for (no HDMI cable)
3. The device has on the right side vents that should not be changed.
4. The device installs itself essentially even (tuning etc.).
5. On the Internet it sparks both 2.4 and 5 GHz on. WPA2 is supported. The connection can be made via key input or WPS.
6. Currently, firmware 1.36. An update you can just make the internet after the device has been connected to it. Firmware 1:30 seems to contain only a few bug fixes.

7. Who stream TV channel on the mobile device or want to control the recorder via App, wants it can download for free the app DIGA Player. For the use of Remote Recording must be doubly activated:
- Registration on the website Pansonic rec-Panasonic-com (replace underscores by dots)
- Coupling of the device (start app for when both devices are on the same Wi-Fi; app will search the device itself). Then the remote programming then goes via the Internet.

8. Who has another Panasonic device whose remote control is in conflict, must choose both the device in the settings menu as well as on the FB a different code. How to do this is on page 99 of the manual.
9. If necessary, a CI module must be plugged with smartcard.
10. Who wants a permant visible clock, the display brightness has a maximum turn.

11. When the recorder time has massive malfunctions or can not find it the App, it will help if necessary to separate it from the power (so to speak, a cold reset).

III. Functional description, test, critique (constantly being extended)

1. Media playback (4.5 stars)

a) There is nothing to nag. Picture and sound are 1A. Also 3D-BD can be played and on request can even be scaled up to 4D. The drive is very quiet (both HDD and DVD / BD). All major formats can be played back from an SD card or via USB (flash drive / HDD). When encoded for Apple Devices Video Files (MP4, M4V) it is somewhat picky and plays and some some files (unlike for example the PS3) not.
TIP: Especially fine of hearing people can turn off the HDD via the menu function with the strange name sound enhancement mode. But beware: Unless one turns the back, no more timer recordings are possible.

b) media can also be played from USB hard drives (must be smaller than 160 GB). When the hard drives, the device distinguishes between two types:
- Hard drives, one of which reflect externally positioned played contents can (USB device). These plates can not be used to move files (see below 5b). They can be formatted in FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS.
- Hard drives to move data (USB HDD). These have to be registered (and thus deleted) and can only be used to offload data (see below 5b).

2. Streaming media / apps (4 stars)

a) A highlight of the device is the ability to stream not only photos from the hard drive, but also TV shows. The following generally applies to:
- The streaming via DLNA (the recorder appears on the network as a DLNA Media Server).
- The device with the app / PC must be sure are in the same wireless network. A stream over the Internet can not.
- The stream is a delay of a few seconds. So do not be surprised if your football streams and all other cheering been a few seconds before you when a goal is scored ...
- DVD or Bluray content will not getreamt.
- The streaming may not work reliably when the recorder just takes a picture or copy something.
- The stream is grds. problems at all stations that can be received without the CI module and CAM card (also in HD).
- For encrypted (pay-TV) channels it gets complicated: This can be even streamed, but only as long as the recorder the CI module for other tasks need (about shooting). If an encrypted program is streamed, can not be looked at the same time on a TV other encrypted program. That's annoying, but guilt are here probably the transmitter.
- When a scrambled program to be streamed with protection of minors, which is necessary, not because the app does not allow entering a PIN. Solutions: disable a) protection of minors, or b) to select the channel on the recorder, enter the PIN with the remote control and in the app to display the current straight on the recorder program (appears when the recorder is running, the first entry in the list of programs to choose on ARD).

I have the following streaming options tested: aa) app, bb) PC, CC) PS3, dd) Panasonic TV (DLNA). Here the (slightly marbled) Result:

aa) App DIGA Player (Android / iOS, iOS 4 stars, 1 star Android)
Use the app DIGA Player streams the device the TV and the hard drive contents on demand on a smartphone or tablet. That's basically great and works with iOS mostly good. The iOS app does not allow further stream the app to Apple TV. Crashes the app when iOS times from, it may be that even the recorder first again is no longer encrypted channel. But notice the recorder that after a short time and is the CAM card again.
The Android App (App 1.3.1) only works for remote programming, streaming does not go. This is since October 2013 way. Panasonic ignored the complaints of Android users. Remedy: Using a combination of the Apps BubbleUPnP and VLC to stream goes. Both can be downloaded free of charge.

bb) streaming to the PC (3 stars)
Unfortunately, there is no Windows app to the recorder. The recorder, however (less than good) recognized by Windows Media Player, so grds. Can be streamed disk content on Windows PCs. Even TV programs are streamed.

In Windows Media Player, the recordings, see videos and TV programs on TV recordings, although not the station name, but the name of the current program is shown. Unfortunately, the whole thing is a bit uncomfortable. You can download / record programs by going to the title, then press the right mouse button and copy the link to ".... BDY" from the properties of videos on the PC. To then enter in the browser and choose "Save As" and append "VOB".

Other freeware DLNA clients (eg XMBC) I can not connect to the recorder. The latest version of VLC does not support more streaming mW. PowerDVD and WinDVD are to function as a DLNA client, but I did not and in the test versions is precisely this function is deactivated, the current versions of these programs. A program that the program name (ARD, etc.) indicates how Panasonic app or Panasonic TV, I can not find.

bb) streaming to PS3 (4 stars)
The PS3 recognizes the server and you can even select favorite list. If you have indeed done this not the program name (ARD, etc.) indicating only the program title, but at least in the order of stations. The streaming works very well. Also films of the HDD can be streamed (sometimes mucks the PS3 and displays an error message, then just try again).

dd) streaming for Panasonic-second TV in another room (5 Stars)
Perfect. The TV shows a selection menu (HD films, TV programs, photos). If you select TV programs are displayed with the correct station name, the station lists of the recorder (Favorites, etc.). The stream is outstanding. It's almost as if the recorder and the TV via HDMI would be associated (though you can not directly change channels and HbbTV / teletext etc. Of course, not going well, it's just one video stream only). Also, some Panasonic BD player (eg my older BT230 plant) behave accordingly and allow a very comfortable streaming. In older Panasonic players the Auswahmenü but may not be displayed. The stream then as the PS3.

How is that with other DLNA-enabled televisions / BD player / media boxes (WD TV Live etc.), I was not able to try out for lack of hardware. For feedback to I would be grateful. I'm building then here.

ee) Tips: (1) BCT / BST and PC / device with the app should be connected to the same wireless router. Are they connected to different routers / repeaters, it sometimes takes a long time until they can be found or not found. (2) If the WLAN is too lame, aa) helps connect via a LAN cable, bb) a menu settings "conversion setting for DLNA" to reduce stuttering (at the price that you will no longer coil can). It is also the quality of the DLNA-data stream reduced to 3 Mbit / s (or both).

b) The app DIGA Player is also responsible for the remote recording control (Remote Recording). This works but only when recorder and app were once coupled to the WLAN (see above). That could also use the Web browser. You have to ensure only on the side of rec-panasonic-com login (dashes at the address replaced by dots).

c) When the device several apps are pre-installed (eg YouTube, ZDF Mediathek, Rovi Guide, Skype). For Skype even a button on the FB is present. It takes, however, a special (expensive) Panasonic-Cam for it. Other apps can partly free, partly in exchange for money to be reloaded on the Panasonic Marketplace. A LOVEFiLM app does not yet exist. But Panasonic has now upgraded with the latest firmware update a Web browser.

3. EPG (2.5 stars)

a) The EPG is faster than the previous generation, but otherwise unfortunately hardly changed and thus totally outdated. There is only the horizontal view with multiple channels over each other and the programs side by side. Switching to the detailed vertical representation of the program a transmitter is (unlike with most receivers) do not. The EPG does not allow searching for specific programs. Series programming done as the old VHS recorder statically (ie the recorder takes each week the program at the same time on). Modern EPG identify new series episodes and automatically adjust the transmission times on. This can not be the Panasonic (unlike for example the cable Germany HD recorder from Sagem). After the TV program is displayed in a small window if the EPG is running.

b) The updating of the EPG as with its predecessors and as already there often still criticized unreliable. Data are often not automatically reloaded or only 1, 2 days (you have to then select the station and press the i button to prevent it from the data obtained). Also, the many other EPGs better, especially supply the station data for an entire week. If necessary, it helps to have the device to run on the info channel of the cable / satellite provider 15 minutes or.

c) A certain remedy also creates the Rovi Guide. This is another EPG that is available under Network Services. About this you can directly program programs for recording, and it has a search function. An automatic continuous shooting (with automatic adjustment of changed broadcasting times) but is thus not possible. An integrated contemporary EPG would have been better.

4. AVCHD processing (1.5 stars)

You can take the device also AVCHD recordings, which have been made even on the camcorder "edit (actually only rearrange, delete individual recordings and the rest on DVD or BD burning). If you plug in the SD card directly from your camcorder, you can copy the files from this. The recorder accepts the various files grds. as a movie on. The individual files are. At the beginning of each chapter is briefly displayed to chapters when it was recorded.
Annoying: The machine is copying AVCHD files only on the original SD card (with all created by the camcorder directories) or DVD / BD. From the USB HDD he plays AVCHD files while easily from, but refuses to copy them. Also SD cards AVCHD files are not copied if only the MTS files on it. This is not technically necessary, but is based on an almost vexatious copy (the yes, there it comes to your own camcorder recordings, completely out of place is). Even if AVCHD files are copied from a homemade DVD or BD on the HDD, the unit checks only for minutes if they are not copy protected.
One can by the way (for whatever reason) to copy AVCHD files from the HDD to DVD or BD only. A copy of the (own!) Camcorder footage to SD, USB flash drive or an external drive does not allow the unit. The understand who wants ...

5. Copy / Move (1 Star)

a) Move (USB external HDD)
- Up to eight external hard drives can be registered. The Log-in Registration includes formatting in a special format. WARNING: All data will be deleted; after all, does it not by mistake, but only on a (by necessity a button for several seconds to press against children and reckless protected) Menu.
- The plates have a capacity of between 160 GB and 2 TB have (under 160 GB disks will not be recognized).
- The sockets deliver 500 mA voltage, which is sufficient for most USB 2.0, 2.5-inch disks.
- One can only drive to offload at once connect (at front or rear USB 2.0 port).
- Pour into the plates 2.0 TV recordings can then be moved using USB. Mind you: You can only move pictures. You will then be (like it or not) will be deleted from the internal HDD. Conversely, the same game: You can move files from the external to the internal HDD, but not copy, because the original is deleted forcibly. That seems like a bad joke, but it is unfortunately true.
- You can see the videos and other files will also play directly from the disc connected to the recorder.
- Can not record TV on an external drive you. That's too bad.
- The recordings on the disc can (not even with another recorder of the same type) to be played only with the specific recorder. Also PCs no longer recognize the plates

NOTE: If you delete the registration of a board, the content can no longer be played back in your own recorder and when the recorder is broken, all recordings on the external panels are gone because of this harassment. Panasonic recommends therefore to use the boards only for temporary storage of data, and it better to burn on DVD / BD ... In times when files are played less and less of optical media and an increasing number of HDD that is something as the mother of bad jokes!

WARNING: It gets worse: Before separating a plate from the recorder, you must select Disconnect on the hard drive disk menu. If you forget the draws or the USB cable once accidentally short from (whether the recorder is on or off), the recorder does not recognize the drive after reconnecting and all data are irretrievably gone. Since it no copyright or technical reason can be seen, which is to name almost mischievous.

TIP: plates that have been used with the Panasonic recorder, will no longer be recognized by the PC if necessary. If that's the case, you can format the master and thus make it usable again for the PC with the freeware EASEUS Partition.

- The fact that such harassment must be no way, for example, show the Hisense TVs, the simple and humble here Create a connected, any formatted and any size hard drive to its own folder in which they then own recordings for any other TV, Media Player or store PC readable H.264 (MP4). One needs in this way not a plate of syndicated content to play (USB device) and another for own recordings (USB HDD) as at Panasonic.

b) Copy
- Copying is a science in itself (less friendly: a pain in the ...) because it is complicated by a completely illogical and arbitrary system of constraints (for details see the instructions). Between the media (internal / external HDD, SD, DVD / BD) can store files in both partly (rare), often in only one direction and are sometimes not copied. What point is, does not follow a recognizable pattern and is in particular not always legitimated by the protection of copyright or technically. This is particularly true for the total nonsensical restrictions on copying AVCHD files even recorded on your camcorder.
- If you want to copy DVDs / BDs, the remaining time is indicated only for the DR mode. This can, for example, the old DVD / HDD recorder from Pioneer better, indicating the remaining time starting from the selected copy quality (and thus the real time remaining).
- Rather strange: Before copying the device also estimates how long it will take well. Copying then goes but almost always much faster. I want to copy an 11 minute recording to a DVD-RW 2x example. The unit appreciated only 23 minutes, then corrected himself, but soon after the start of recording in a realistic 5 minutes.
- If you have made the recordings with another recorder, the device checks a forever (because it is their own recordings, apparently even nonexistent) copy protection signal. I have for example a television program (2 hours, free-TV) with my analog Sony DVD recorder to a DVD-VR copied (about 4 GB). When I play this movie from the DVD back to the hard drive, the Sony or my old Pioneer recorder need for almost 8 minutes. Fast, reliable, problem-free. The Panasonic is also here the prima donna and needs only 13 (!) Minutes for checking the imaginary (on the DVD nonexistent) copy protection signal, and then by 8 minutes for the actual copying (after all together only 21 minutes instead of the 38 minutes the device before copying estimates). The same sense of loosely organized game device when copying hand-rolled with the camcorder and the PC fired on DVD or BD AVCHD files: the copy protection test takes longer than the actual copying. This is either a firmware bug or pure harassment.
- Given the copy restrictions almost surprising: you can burned with the unit DVDs and BDs actually play on other devices! The course presupposes a finalization. BDs with DR files will not play on some players (eg Sony). Here needs to be converted to another format. In the H-formats (HX etc.) BD recorded but should be generally compatible.

6. TV record (4 stars)

a) recordings one should grds. first time in DR mode. This is the optimum quality. There are also all the languages, teletext etc. with recorded at DR. To convert to a different quality, you have to be content with a language and the teletext will be lost.

b) If you want to watch the current program later to end, you can simply press the REC button. The recorder then asks if he should take until the end. You can specify a different time.
ATTENTION: you must not turn off the recorder during a started with REC button recording to standby, otherwise stop recording at (if a timer recording is running, the standby circuit, however does not hurt). This is not perfectly solved. Virtually all receivers that I know, a warning message that asks whether the recording should be recorded or canceled is in this case. But if you know it, it's not so bad. The recorder turns off at the end of the recording itself to standby.

c) There are 32 timers. That's enough, especially weekly recordings only need a single timer. The recording programs can be programmed in four ways: a) manual, b) via the built-in EPG, c) on the built-in EPG app Rovi Guide (see Figure 3b), d) on the smartphone app DIGA player (also the distance). Unfortunately, the EPG is not worth much. A feature that automatically searches for and receives series episodes (even when changing start times), is missing. VPS no longer exists, AR also is not.

d) The unit has digital tuner with which it record two programs at once or record one and a display for viewing can. BST = 2 SAT programs, BCT = two DVB-C or DVB-T programs. When BCT can only either DCB-C or DVB-T use (there is only an antenna connection).

WARNING: There are several situations in which the recorder might not start a programmed recording, because he is busy with something else (see instructions). In particular, you should be very careful that copy actions between the media are completed before recording should start:
- When a copy with Conversion (real-time) is done, can the recorder as long as it takes, do nothing else. So take no broadcasts.
- If a Quick Copy done (high-speed), it can take only one and not two programs simultaneously. However, the device warns now, if you choose to copy, front and offers to stop copying. This is acceptable.

e) If the record PAY-TV or HD channels is not working: This is probably because some stations require the. Panasonic followed extent their specifications.

f) recording problems (2nd recording stops) can be due to a firmware bug, which occurs well when you walk in the general channel list the hook behind unwanted senders. For details see review of Helmi for BCT 730th

7. TV View (5 Stars)

a) When you look TV with the recorder (via HDMI), is permanently recorded. Ie you can the image, even if you have not chosen To stop recording and max. Rewind 90 minutes. Also the picture in SD as HD is very good.

b) The unit not only offers Teletext (which is displayed in most stations in rather modest quality in a slightly scaled-down window), but also HbbTV (currently broadcast by ARD, ZDF, Arte and RTL). That is very nice. You can reach the ZDF media library for example without going through the network services menu.

c) Because the device automatically sets quite reliable chapter markers based on the contents, advertising can be most easily by (possibly multiple) pressure to Skip Forward skip. Automatic chapter mark (on by default) so let hired the best. You can manually set chapter points also while viewing by pressing CHAPTER.
Very nice for watching shooting are also the MANUAL SKIP buttons on the bottom right on the FB. So you can push of a button or jump back 60 seconds before 10 seconds. About the TIME SLIP button you can also set a specific time to be skipped.
If the coil / Skip does not work while viewing HD recording: The reason is that some stations ban. Panasonic followed extent their specifications.

IV. Conclusion

I give the recorder just four star. In principle it is a good and sometimes very innovative device with many features and great features (eg TV-Streaming and Remote Recording), but do not always function reliably.
