Customer Review

After about 40 years and a dozen Nikon, it is ultimately for the past 10 years I moved to digital, especially in the last three years especially with Sony, Olympus Lumix.et.
First with Olympus Camedia then always with all Nikon APS-C one after the other to achieve the current D7100.
But for about 3 years, I have mainly drifted Sony, Lumix, Pentax, Olympus and Canon Fijinon, looking for performance cameras in all categories: Pocket, compact, bridge, system and also DSLR because Nikon are quite cumbersome and small cameras and bridges are handy and meanwhile very efficient.

Originally, I 'd intended der regularly sell my cameras to replace them with the latest news and this is what I have done with the Lumix GX3, GX5, GH2, Sony RX100 II, Canon EOS-M Olympus E-M10, Olympus Stylus 1, Nikon D5100, etc., but there are many cameras that are so exceptional, that I do not have the heart of m 'to separate, so that I find myself now - to stay in the category of pocket cameras - the Lumix with LX100, LX7, GX7, GM5, Sony RX100 III, Canon G7X and others like Nikon P330 or P340. It's not easy to manage, especially the many chargers and rechargeable batteries, but it helps to do some pretty exceptional comparisons. I have decided to make you enjoy my opinion, but briefly, because you can learn about the features on the web.
And as I speak several languages fluently, I also can tell you fair share of interesting experiences of other users, inaccessible if not perfect mastery of English or German ..

The LX100 is one of cameras that can take anywhere. I 'was for example in the pocket of my jacket this weekend to film a Polo tournament in northern Germany.
It is also effective for the videos to photos, image quality is frankly superb. even with very little brightness because she has a MFT sensor significantly wider than 1 inch from the Sony RX100 Canon or R 7 X. Of course, it remains below that I can do my stroke A7R Zeiss lens and a big, but this combination weighs about 2 kg and I'm not talking about the price.
Technically, the MFT tops out at 16 MP sensor, even in the Lumix GH4. In the LX100, he produced about 10.5 MP because the camera is multi-format with 4 different formats (1: 1, 3: 2, 4: 3 and 16: 9) and uses as appropriate, that a part of the sensor.
I had my doubts about this plan and details of the dive, I am spoiled with the 36 MP of a 24x36, but frankly I'm not disappointed, just like in the song Brassens "Hooves of Hélène" .

The lens covers an equivalent focal range to 24-75mm. The diaphragm opens between f / 1.7 and 2.8. The also multiply those values of openness by 2 to get the equivalent in full-size .. Those who doubt can watch over Tony Northrup on youtube.
It is little and the limit for some scenes. But I must admit that given the excellent quality of the Leica lens and the sensor, and the fact that it has legs, this is not a major handycap.
Unless, of course, if you go to the zoo or to Kenia close-ups of animals, birds or squirrels photografier etc. there had better take a Lumix FZ1000 or Sony FX400V.
But the LX100 is ideal for leisure and excursions.

It is more robust than the Canon G7X. A German holidaymaker who wore it in the pocket of his pants hit the handlebars of his motorcycle and slightly distorted the closure of the goal blocked and eventually struck the lens. Repair in Bankok has cost 280 Euro.
The LX100 has a real cap and lens is retractable, it is less comfortable but more on.
In addition, users of G7X note the rapid appearance of dust grains in the goal.
The screen of the LX100 is neither mobile nor touch, but for this reason éalement more robust.
The battery of the Canon quickly empty and the price of a replacement is astronomical.
Finally the LX100 has an excellent viewfinder that allows to use it in direct sunlight.

In my opinion, the LX100 is therefore aptly suited to holidaymakers and tourists.
But it should also be noted, that due to its limited focus and its fixed screen, it is not good to do it all. For this reason, I also have other cameras, which are also more or less specialized. For panoramas, for example, there are better.

The LX100 is very quick, the AF works fine, but in video mode, it requires up to 5 seconds to move from close to far. It's long! On the contrary, to go to the distant close up, it takes about half, which is acceptable.
Also in video mode, it stops recording after 10 seconds with a 10 class card, even good.
So I use the cards
- Sony I SDXC, 64 GB, 94 MB / s
- Lexar Professional 128 GB
- Samsung 64 PRO I SDXC
- Transcend Ultimate SDXC UHS-I 4K Ultra HD, 64 GB, 95 MB / s (read) / 60 MB / s (write).

The LX100 is more massive than the Canon R 7 X, Lumix GM5 or Sony RX100 because she also has a bigger sensor (except GM5 also MFT), but the hand has much better because she has a drawback on the front right on which to firmly hold it. C 'st paradoxical, but I can not shoot with the Sony or the Canon Limited Time Offer with one hand because these cameras are too smooth.

The handling of the LX100 still needs a period of acoutumance. I've owned maybe 50 cameras and half a dozen camésopes and I have never read a manual to use, because I assumed that a camera should be understandable regardless of the architecture or order software.
The LX100 is different from other cameras, but that is understandable: The diaphragm is set directly on the lens, with the speed dial on top, but it has not wheels in front or behind or program choices as all the high-end cameras which I am accustomed.
But it is still very convenient with 2 nd knob on top to correct the exposure.
Above all, it has an automatic mode that works very well, as all good cameras from Panasonic, Sony, Fuji, Olympus etc., but this mode is triggered by a hidden button and evil reached between the dials. It is quite bizarre.
I have often had difficulties to trigger a video, the button does not give enough feedback, but we can s' used to it.
In short, it is not beyond the LX100 of the cabinet once a year and is instinctively operational all-in-on.
It happened to me many times of my eyes away for a overview or finds the right button and miss scenes. Of course, these are not things that happen if it is used frequently.

The LX100 is also a fairly unobtrusive camera, for example for street fotography. It is totally silent, focuses very quickly (except in video mode) and iA mode makes it about 90% of successful pictures.
Therefore, we can say that it s' also addressed to beginners, but now I think a total lack of experience, a Nikon P340 is still the best choice, even if the sensor is smaller, it is even more compact, more flexible mobile and less expensive, it is the preferred camera from my wife ..

The LX 100 is superb macros a few centimeters of the goal, provided using the wide angle. I can shoot my watch more than full screen almost instantly iA mode, and without any geometric distortion.

In summary, the LX100 is well equipped and robust. I would say it holds the road to cover such a holiday in Australia or Egypt.
To cover the wedding of the daughter, my preference would be rather to the Sony RX100 III.
I also have a frankly interesting camera: The Lumix GM5, extremely compact with interchangeable lenses. But as soon as one puts a Zoom, she no longer goes into the pocket of trousers.
Now a little bigger and with APS-C sensor, I have the Sony A6000, but again you need a big enough budget to invest in good objectives.

The LX100 is neither the most compact, not the most comfortable or the most versatile and not really cheap.
If I had to buy that camera, it would perhaps not at the top of my list, but ultimately, given its excellent Leica lens, the superb quality of photos and videos, its viewfinder and his strength, I do not regret the expense.

PS
J adds that I have the LX100 well in hand because of his frontal drawback. I can hold it with your right hand and holding an object in his left hand photografier. This kind of shooting is not easily possible with other more compact cameras like GM5, because as the camera n 'has not this cushion, I have to tighten strong between the middle and with the palm and trigger forefinger, forcing to do stunts.
Fortunately, GM5 has a rough surface on the front, but most other n 'not, as Sony RX100 III and it takes hold with 2 hands. By cons, remove the cap of the LX100 obectif manually.
I set up my screen with 2 horizontal and vertical lines, thereby align myself on the horizon or a mat in the absence of level.

When it is deployed Zoomm, the total length of the camera (or depth) of 11.7 cm, including the viewfinder. Once or twice, the goal is not returned to etteignant the camera. In this case it should be back on and turn it off again.

Between the LX100, GM5, Canon and Sony RX100 G7X III, I can not really say that I have a favorite because they all have advantages and disadvantages. By cons, if you are looking for small und simple camera to use and very discreet with image quality and much appreciated-held video account of his small sensor, I recommend the small Nikon P340 is really good all and very cheap, and the Olympus Stylus SH1 I sold to friends, not because she did not suit me, but to please them.
The downside is that for these small cameras the diaphragm rises and closes quickly as soon as one increases the focal length and there are geometric distortions at wide angle. But on the other hand they have a very powerful Zoom, 20x I think for Nikon.
