Gran Turismo 5 - Collector's Edition (Video Game)

Customer Review

Introduction:
Gran Turismo. With these two words was created in 1997 by Polyphony Digital is a brand that should remain unique to Sony's PlayStation systems. With the well-formulated claim to provide the real driving simulator, the software company in each new console Generaton replaces exclusively to place once again raised the bar for real Simulatonsracing on the PlayStation higher.

With the games to Gran Turismo 4 for PlayStation 2 the development team has managed this well every time. In present report is to be examined now is whether Polyphony's own claim, and the fans, even in the fifth installment of the series can meet.

So far, the following main titles for stationary consoles under the brand appeared:
* Gran Turismo (Sony PlayStation, 1997)
* Gran Turismo 2 (Sony PlayStation, 1999)
* Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (Sony PlayStation 2, 2001)
* Gran Turismo 4 (PlayStation 2, 2005)
* Gran Turismo 5 (Sony PlayStation 3, 2010)

In between several titles, which may be regarded as a kind of affordable Demo (including Prologue versions), but often designed even larger in scope than some were full-price title other manufacturers appeared.

The game was therefore a good 5 years in development and has undergone some shifts in this period. Already long ago remarked the creator and mastermind behind the series, Kazunori Yamauchi, to the effect that the game is actually finished and you might publish this basically immediately. But we really wanted to deliver an excellent gaming experience and therefore take all necessary time.
Many players sunk, however, that the numerous shifts had to lead mainly imputed to that one part of Sony necessarily always wanted to build a new flagship technologies in their favorite child, such as. The support for the new Bewegunssteuerung MOVE (but, contrary to other reports in Ahead of the show, does not exist), and head tracking and the new 3D feature for accordingly compatible TV sets.

Anyway, ultimately, the game appeared a few weeks ago and since then the fans expected to plunge greedily on the software.
Although from many quarters again and again partly harsh criticism heard whether of several serious shortcomings, the game high sales figures delighted still. It is and remains Gran Turismo.

Game Start:
The game comes in a pretty package and therefore includes not only, as in the standard version, only a fairly narrow booklet with basic information, but the Apex booklet with detailed information and advice. Buyers of CE are a clear advantage. In addition there are in-game extras (called Chrome Line cars:. Five turnkey sled with improved performance) and trading cards, and a theme.
If one has pushed the disc into the drive, you will be faced with a choice: install or not install. It should be noted that reducing the load times significantly, you should opt for the installation on the internal HDD. Otherwise, game content would shoveled onto the hard disk during the game little by little.
I opted for the installation, which weighs about 7 GB and (and I've been amazed) took a good 50 minutes to complete.

If you have survived the procedure, receives a a pretty decent screen with several icons for access to GT and Arcade Mode, and Video Options area. In the background hums the familiar lounge music that has now adapted the way at Christmas time and plays corresponding festive songs. Very nice!

Let's get straight to the GT-mode (because the Arcade mode is nothing other than a selection mode for quick race).
The menu dortens turns out nicely and won unlike GT4 back significantly on clarity. Familiar labels and symbols ensure that you to find your way quickly.
Already in GT4 could drive themselves (A-spec) or let go (B-spec). This time there are two parallel careers, one as a driver and once as a manager, unfortunately with almost identical race.
But we come first to the other GT modes:
Of course GBT again the licenses. Unlike the previous share PD criticism of fans but has taken to heart and no longer applicable to the licenses required course. It remains a free to decide whether you want to do the rock-hard tasks patience or not. It then waived but possibly on Experience, new automobiles and trophies.

Speaking Experience: In the new GT5 must level up and its driver. It is no longer permitted to cross to hop through all the championships and races, when you feel like it and a corresponding car. Only you have to work a certain skill level, what I do not personally feel particularly successful. Even the available cars are based on this experience stages. Some cars you can afford so maybe, but they may not buy. Needless. But the tension is to be maintained, not to have the same a good car, with all wins.

In addition to the licenses, there are the so-called. Special events, which are basically nothing more than extended license exams. Why did that so I do not know, and I think it's completely unnecessary. The races there are some quite attractive, but by the royalty typical limitations that you may initiate anywhere without being disqualified, the whole is a farce.
The collision detection is in this case anyway rather badly managed. It lightly touches the wall: disqualification! If you rammed by another: disqualification! And so it goes on. Pure frustration.
In addition, the AI is really stupid hammer. The moves to its ideal line, as would depend the survival of the world from. And so it happens very often that you will be hit by the AI brutally of the track.

Manufacturer-specific races missing this time completely, by two or three 1-race cups aside. Too bad.

Otherwise, and this is of great benefit, there is each course for practice and testing of vehicle settings.

Ultimately remain the Tuning Hall and the GT-forum where you mount spoiler, wash the car, perform an oil change and can perform racing modifications. Although you can also paint his car again, but the selected color (which you also must learn to only and only the added gets new that the carriage newfound grade has) can be seen only on a test object (a sort of tub ) and not the car. Very unnecessary. And shame is that you can freely choose the colors and variations are not simple, such as Need for Speed:. Shift. FlipFlop, Candy and another can forget same time you therefore, unless one gets eg a Tuscan Speed in its corresponding paint.

Since the latest update (as of 24.12.2010) and further challenges have been added that a demand from when it comes to tuning and driving skills, and some also have correspondingly lucrative in terms of experience points and money. Unfortunately, there are no cars to win, and the drift and time trial bring nothing in terms of level points or money. So PD maintains his game continuously. Very commendable.

The menu is at times somewhat hakelig incidentally and suffers from very frequent recharging. A piecewise real ordeal. But load times are already an issue in GT5. Total. Simply take too long, no matter where.

Now we come to the main GT modes:
The A-spec mode:
This is basically as usual to the point. Buy car, tuning, if possible, and then show off to the slopes and the opponent, beating. Depending on placement it hails then money and Erfahrungspunnkte and cars that you can add (somewhat cumbersome on a car market) the garage. Unfortunately, most cars that one gets completely for a ton, because all too often simply gets useless, uninteresting stuff like ancient Japanese Plastikbomber with which one can drive anywhere anyway. It often relies on the carts from the licenses or specified by the car dealers because you rarely profits to can not use in other races. Where just the used car dealer has to offer really useful hardly ever.

The B-spec mode:
Here you can sometimes more, sometimes less sit back relax and let a salaried driver perform his duties. At some point, you have a whole team together consisting of more drivers that you will need, above all, for the endurance race. One should be careful here, level up all the riders, because otherwise they simply drive around in an emergency only stupid in the sand.
What particularly bothers me the new B-spec is that you still can (increase speed) the game does not pause fast forward. No idea why this must be so, but it is annoying as hell.
By means of the commands "go slow", "Tempo hold" go faster "and" overtake "you can now take on his driver's influence and instruct him accordingly. He will then remain cool or device such boil that anger caused him by the haul breaks. So it's instinct asked. Especially at the beginning of the B-spec career costs nervous because colleague B-Spec driver has some very unconventional methods to contest a race.
From the highest B-Spec racing class you can then also give the order to the pit stop.
A little reminds the compilation and gameplay to an RPG, albeit away when choosing your avatar, chooses whether he drives hot-blooded or cold head if he is physically strong and mentally spry and then begins to level him up , Is vll not for everyone, but it certainly has its appeal. It is a step forward for B-spec in GT4.

Graphics:
Here we come to a very sensitive issue.
Always the GT brand was known for setting new standards in its genre. GT5: Prologue has been here a wriklichen delicious taste.
But, and this is anticipated here, this good taste has changed in GT5 on a bad aftertaste.
Why? Well. It was, that's right, known from the outset that PD will share the car in so-called. Premium models and standard versions. This should be different in the fact that the standard cars offer no cockpit view. Why, however, for example, offers a Bugatti Veyron just as standard and against a measly Fiat 500 as a premium, will probably forever remain a mystery.
But that's not all. The S models are graphically partially underground and easy rüberkopiert plump from GT4. Some cars have been given to more trouble here (eg. Nissan Skyline), but apparently simply had no desire for many. The cars are full of washed-out graphics, pixelated and squared wheel arches, shapeless edges and aliasing. I'm exaggerating here in no way: some cars are quite simply an impertinence, and it would have been better this rauszunehmen, as such incorporate a shame. That is unworthy of this game easily.
Even with the routes there are lights and shadows. Some of the courses are beautifully designed and offer even outside the range of variety, such as. The Eiger North Face. Since there are 3D characters that cheer, there are blowing the flags. Beautiful! But unfortunately that is the exception. On most routes, the graphics are acceptable (of Trial Mountain apart with the ugly shimmering lake), but there is absolutely dead pants. No marshals can be seen, no spectators - and if they are sitting lifeless 2D pixels in the stands that give no sound itself.
Also: why I leave no trace on the alternative surfaces (sand and grass, etc.) if I by intoxication there?
In addition, the game suffers from violent graphics errors. The image is constantly torn ugly (tearing) and the cars suffer from extreme flicker and aliasing. The shadows of the cars are so embarrassed grobpixelig and designed that you feel to be on the road on the PS1. That looks really quite bad! In general, I find that the graphics of the Premium models is indeed very pretty, but has remained of the verprochenen in previews gloss little.

Games Size:
GT5 promised, according to news reports more than 1,000 cars in more than 20 routes.
Well, that promise was kept. But what I need please alone more than 60 Nissan cars with almost 40 Skyline versions ?! Dear PD team, why do not you stroking it 50 pieces and the time invested in premium models?

The routes are numerous, which I would have liked a little more world lines, but perhaps failed to licenses, who knows. So still missing Hockenheim, Norisring, Bathurst or spa. Too bad, because GT5 is, it shows again on the weekly sales of the various continents, the product sells best, especially in Europe. The focus on Japanese car, which has always been available, therefore puzzled still. The Porsche license is still not there, and is, as usual, offset by RUF. Needless are premium models such as the VW Bulli and the VW jeep. What is this, please?

The following routes are (forward / backward) in several variants:
* Fuji Speedway
* Suzuka Circuit
* Daytona International Speedway
* Tsukuba
* Circuit de la Sarthe
* Nürburgring
* Nordschleife
* Indianapolis Motor Speedway
* Monza
* Top Gear
* Laguna Seca
* High Speed Ring
* Capering
* Autumn Ring
* Deep Forest Raceway
* Grand Valley Speedway
* Eigernordwand Track
* Trial Mountain Circuit
* London
* Rome
* Circuito de Madrid
* Tokyo R246
* Côte d'Azur
* Special Stage Route 5
* Special Stage Route 7
* Toscana
* Chamonix

In addition to lack of world-racetracks therefore be missing Seattle, Infineon Raceway, test track, Twin Ring Motegi, Seoul, Hong Kong, New York, Midfield Raceway, El Capitan and others. There is therefore much back-haul recycling (but let's be honest: we want the old routes all!) And unfortunately nothing new.

As regards the car park: there are "only" 200 Premium models. 200 vehicles are already an immense number. But if you look closely, you realize that the relativized. The aforementioned VW jeep, the Fiat 500 (the candy on wheels) and other cars that no one really wants, were lavishly recreated incl. Interior. I do not know why.
There are over 800 standard models, as has been said, of "Whoa cool" to "what a shit" rich and rare look really pretty. I personally would have preferred, would have focused on PD 300 Premium models genuine and really made everything fine. But acts as the botch. Main mass, not class, also is the most carts just collects but never really goes.

One more question PD: Why can not I turn my car in the garage and admired by all the outer and inner sides?

The driving physics:
We come to the most important. The Fahrpysik in GT5 unparalleled even more. Since there is no discussion in my eyes. Here is the attention to detail at Polyphony visible again, because the car is driving all different and each just so tiny alteration of components or setup manifests itself in some form. That's just really cool! I draw comfort tires on (the normal) the crate moves quite differently, as for example. With average race tire. I mount spoiler, I have better downforce, I install Semi-racing flywheels, the response is better and so on and so forth. Here all the work was, fortunately, done.

The tuning options:
As already indicated, PD leaves nothing to be desired here. From engine tuning, the incorporation of turbos up for weight loss and the installation of fully adjustable gears and undercarriages or differentials, there is everything! And the nice thing is just that you can test the built-in parts and changes first before throwing yourself into the race. Only 100% "malingerers" desire here even more.

The sound:
When it comes to sound GT5 leaves a mixed impression. While the engine sounds are deep and round, but they resemble each other too much. As you descend into an old Mazda and roars like a V8. There's something wrong.
But much curiously is the sound when the cars jostle each other. Whether you play from the cockpit view or looks of the bumper ago on the slopes, the cars sound on contact always so, as if two angry watering cans carry a wrestling match. A muffled "Boeng" rings out and lets the player asking back, "What it was now"

Otherwise, you can not complain about the sound in the game. Solid.

The Control:
With regard to the controls PD has left nothing to be desired. It supports dozens of steering wheels, as well as the normal controller plus (allegedly) MOVE. Although often claimed otherwise: MOVE is, as I said, does not support. I play GT has always been with the gamepad and moan about my sore finger. About the integration of other control options, principally steering wheels must therefore unfortunately others judge.

The track editor:
New in GT is an integrated track editor. But if you think now, to be able to design their own courses here in complete freedom, will be disappointed. There are pre-made rings that can be adapted with different parameters, then changed the route. Not more. A safe very nice feature, I personally do not need it to be happy with the game. Had omit and the resources can be used elsewhere.

Multiplayer:
I have tested following the MP: Online vs. Friends and online vs. Strangers.
If one has zurechtegefunden in somewhat confused (for me) menu once, but soon you will find yourself on home ground again. One can from his garage choose a car that a pre-established rules equivalent and can then compete against friends or against people from around the world. For me personally there is not much to go to any man, but I am also not a typical online players, on the contrary. I liked it always much prefer to go against my own cronies into the field. And that was really happy. Split-screen races, there are probably also, I have read, I have not yet tried out.

Conclusion:
Well, the GT-feeling is back? Clearly: yes! GT5 is a GT, no question, and it's also a really good game. But this good game, has this time just too many scratches in the paint. Loading times, graphical glitches, sound errors and mistakes in detail left a bad aftertaste to an otherwise great again court. One can but be sure that PD will take care of his baby - how? Well, time will tell. At the moment GT5 missed but clearly the finish line as the top product.
GT5 is good! It's fun, it's challenging, it's mostly realisitisch and ensures the typical "oh, this is a race yet, that's the end" feeling. But GT5 is this time not very good. It's cluttered with meaningless vehicles and has been in development apparently focus on false features set (head tracking, 3D), which could have been replacement delivery.
PD is here failed on their own standards and in particular to the expectation of self-generated.
But as I said, the game is still great fun and should be bought. I just hope that PD patches, there's no tomorrow.

To sum up: 8/10 (just barely)
