My dream kitchen ... (update 11/12/14)

Kenwood KM 086 Cooking Chef Kitchen Machine (1500 watts, LCD display) (household goods)

Customer Review

Visual appearance of the machine:
Very solid, but unfortunately not a real highlight in the design, because in real life, the aspect ratios of the machine are slightly different than they appear on the product images. This is especially true for the recordings on the product page of the previous model of this CC, the KM70. The machine that I unpacked is narrower in width and also slightly higher than I would have expected based on the pictures. Either you have the product photos a bit squashed in the height or the camera angle makes the aspect ratios appear visually pleasing.

Equipment and Quality:
- All Balloon blow and kneading tools (whisk, dough hook, stirring element, K-hook, flexible beater) are high-1a. There are very large portions of heavy, very robust stainless steel quality. Also, the flexible beater plastic and silicone makes a solid impression.
- When accessories jug (heat resistant glass) and a food processor with knife and 6 steel discs are supplied. Both devices also make a very robust, heavy impression.
- The splash guard is made of fairly thin, not very resistant plastic acting. This seems to me the only candidate from the package, which must be replaced once every now and then.
- Other accessories include spatula, dough scraper, small bottle brush, spanner to adjust the mixing tools, the heat shield for the cooking process, splash guard and manuals for the machine and ancillary equipment.

Handling:
The assembly works well.
- The stirring tools are easy to apply and remove. An exception is the stainless steel stirrer for cooking operations. The is a bit tricky to install, because in addition a pin must be pushed into a guide. Even removing a little more difficult because of the pin.
The connector covers are easy to remove and reattach. I felt that the top cover (for the two high-speed connections) a little too loose sat.
- The bowl is easy to screw with little effort in the machine.
- Assembling / disassembling and mounting the accessories also is quite easy.
- The operating noise of the machine is gratifying quiet compared to my "little" Kenwood Chef.
Update: This statement applies only to the idle. Under "load" the engine is noticeably louder, and then the running noises are quite comparable to those of small Kenwood. Especially the flexible beater can go on the nerve. He tends to produce squeaky sounds that can only be prevented if the stirrer is set higher. But then nothing more is scraped from the bowl walls ....

The additional parts should all be dishwasher-safe according to the description. Apart from the stainless steel tools and the glass container of the mixer, I would personally prefer other wash everything by hand - the Edelstahlrührschüssel. That seems to me to be the more secure method for a long life expectancy)

My personal experience with this appliance:
-------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------
2 years I am "pregnant" gone with their acquisition, until I was finally able to bring myself, not just loose-fitting amount to invest in this -also kitchen geeks like MIR. A Thermomix came for me never question because I do not additionally need a food processor and a heated mixer.

My anticipation was therefore correspondingly large, but was very turbid soon after switching on the device by the error E06 (not listed in the manual). Ie. The real reason to buy, the cooking, did not work out. Was so nothing with arbeitserleichtender production (without water) a hollandaise or eihaltiger matrices for ice. All mechanical connections of the machine functioned perfectly but.

According to information from the Kenwood Customer Service is E06 a fault in the electronics, which actually does not occur in new appliances. The device must be sent in for repair. I was made aware that a warranty applies only to new devices, but I had this "used" as bought at Warehouse Deals. Whatever that might mean in concrete terms for me - to me not to have to engage in a service and warranty crime, I decided to let go back the unit. Too bad. I would be only too happy described my positive experiences with my personal kitchen dream.

One more note:
All agitating members need to be adjusted in height using the supplied wrench. Only the dough hook is set at the factory. Why this is not done for all mixers, do not open up to me. The price should be in it but this. So one leaves the time-consuming Fummelarbeit the paying customers. The IKEA-principle in high-priced kitchen equipment? I think that's in need of improvement.

Conclusion:
----------------
The evaluation of a device always consists of many factors, such as the handling of the equipment, the quality, value for money and service the manufacturer. More than a neutral rating, ie 3 stars, are the best of intentions because of my experience is not there, even if the machine can not help it if she announces E06). For the price, I expect not only high quality, that it works .... and last but not least more goodwill from the manufacturer.

All in all I was almost one working with education and wrap it up again, trying out, cleaning the items and employs more-get. All in vain. Maybe get another CC model someday get another chance - but for now I am once served. The fate of many dreams;).

Update 11:11:13
========================

Dreams seem not faded away as fast;).
Last week I slammed with a good Amazn offer, in the hope that I will have more luck this time. I had? Yes and no.

No:
I caught a reimport. The included cookbook (this time was one case) is in a Slavic language. Similarly, the 4 glossy inserts in a slipcase (first cooking recipes, etc.) and the DVD is not intended for the German market. At least one of the four or five languages offered for me to understand (English). That's before comforting. The Welcome Card is missing. So nix with cooking club. As you can read in forums, but this is not sooo great loss)

Yes:
The machine works perfectly, with the result that I have been 2 days in continuous cooking noise).

First Experiences:
"Normal" Cooking in the CC
Works pretty well, but brings in relation to the preparation in a conventional pot no real advantage. I personally find it quite impractical to give at different times maturing ingredients through the small opening of the splash guard or in the relatively narrow gap between bowl edge and machine. The machine for each ingredient fold is annoying because the condensed water runs off the heat shield towards the machine. That's quite a Planscherei and intercept only through a cleverly placed, absorbent cloth. Stiftung Warentest had exactly the faulted 2 or 3 years ago. Now the only adjustable temperature as Plus. No real advantage when in the household an induction field exists. I personally cook mostly still on a 90-cm-ceramic hob and do not miss a temperature setting. All experience thing ....;)
Conclusion: normal cooking I will continue to do on my hobs - unless I get a (rather improbable) Risotto-phase)

The CC as water baths set
This works well - as hoped. After all, this feature was my real reason to buy. I have been ice, Italian Meringuemasse and lemon curd made. If everything is successful, I'm excited :). A real work easier.
Small drawback: the temperature setting needs some getting used to. The image displayed on the CC display temperature is a few degrees higher than my check measurement. For the preparation of temperature sensitive food must be borne in mind also that the set temperature is not kept constant. It fluctuates generally around 3 degrees. This can sometimes be tricky, if you subtract eihaltige masses to Rose.
Conclusion:
In return, the purchase has actually paid off :)

The CC as a "normal" food processor
Already a great part, compared with my little Kenwood Chef.
Bread dough I have my little head never expected (for I always took my old Bosch with the giant bowl). The CC summarizes as much dough and is a real powerhouse.
From the included essays I have tried so far only the food processor (gives good results). The cutting and rasping and also the mixer were not yet in use.
My already present in the household articles (pasta rollers, extruders, spice mill, cream machine, meat grinder, drum grater, juicer, slicer) I'll try in the next few weeks at the CC and report if there is newsworthy.

Conclusion of the Addendum:
I raise to 4 stars = I like it :)

PS: I have never supplied a photo.

======================
Supplement for temperature adjustment:
Because my egg mixture for ice has almost become scrambled (indicated at the setting 90 °, as in the recipe), I once again concerned me precisely with the temperature setting. The product description states that the precise temperature of 20 ° - 140 ° can be set. The product description states further that the temperature setting in 2 ° steps is possible. So I have again taken a closer look at the thermostat. Its label shows the temperature in increments of 10. In between, there are 3 points, ie 10 ° in 4 temperature ranges divided. Power 2.5 degrees, not 2 °.
What is the practice?
Set the temperature with the regulator a, he snaps between 20 ° and 140 ° 32 times, when I have lost count. Instant adjustment is not possible. But at 2 ° steps he would have to (140-20): 2 = 60 times snap. Dividing 120 by 32 actually adjustable temperature ranges, one arrives at 3.75 ° per step. This means that the temperature can be set accurately only at 20, 50, 80, 110 and 140 °. The teens between empires can not be accurately controlled. If the user / user not look closely at the temperature setting, he / she may be wondering before why the recipe called and set on the machine 90 ° exceed .... 90 ° can not be set viz. Either there are -rein rechnerisch- 87.5 ° or 91.25 °, the display can show no decimal places.

But you can get used to the temperature setting. If you want to prepare meals, where a maximum temperature must not be exceeded or a minimum temperature must be adhered to if one wants to suffer a shipwreck, must stop to consider that the temperature can only be set in 3.75-degree increments, but sufficiently constant, ,

In summary, I can say that I can live with these limitations in the temperature setting, because the hollandaise succeed anyway if you know the pitfalls. I think it is very ugly (carefully worded) when promised product properties are not complied with.

I have tried now
- The shredding disc for Food Processor. With good results. Although relatively thick residues left over, but that does not slice other manufacturers better, at least in my experience (I know so far except Kenwood Bosch and Philips).
- The kneading function: yeast doughs (eg, for bread) are super. Sticky doughs for very dark whole grain breads processed the machine, unfortunately, very poor. This applies to the dough hook, as well as the K-beater. The dough sticks to the bowl wall and must be manually removed with a scraper repeatedly. That was my old kitchen appliance significantly better.

Also worth mentioning:
Although you can also process small amounts of protein, but if the ground is very stiff (like Italian Meringuenmasse) remains the most "stuck" in a balloon whisk. While knocking and shaking helps a bit during detachment of mass, but it remains proportionately too much hanging on the broom.

Update as of 06/14/14 (valid for Italian meringue):
In my experience, the bowl for processing 6 protein is too small. The very stiff egg whites climbs the bowl walls high and touching the paddle. This means that the upper parts of the whisk, the receiving opening, the metal cover of the machine head and the splash guard to cover them with beaten egg white. Cleaning is fiddly because of the many chinks (rubber seal of the heat protection). They must therefore be done immediately after use so that the meringue does not dry. A lot of restriction to 4 egg whites / operation prevents that described above.

16 egg whites as a maximum amount (s. Product description), I think, exaggerated even with no added sugar, a little. With me fill 4 egg whites about 50% of the bowl volume.

Meanwhile, I have the Cooking Chef 2 months almost daily use. In such a period of time you get used to some peculiarities, but other characteristics of a product can also interfere start.
So I was - used to the temperature setting - in a positive sense. I'm now well with it and let do without permanent monitoring their work, the machine often.
In the nerve me going now:
- The lack off. The should be at such a price but it ... One must always pull the plug, and there is no cable storage compartment.
- The automatically reducing on cook-stirring speed 1 speed at 60 °. I wonder who came up with that.
Masses that must be stirred or beaten hot and at high speed, require constant presence so that the user / user at the right time and under much Gepiepe the machine, the "P" may permanently push button until the desired faster stirring speed is reached again , Unfortunately, the machine is often alone by about a Speed level back when the ground heats up further. That is, one is nailed to the machine in order to bring the case of the case the machine back up to speed. If you want to an Italian Meringuenmasse cold hit, is also not without supervision. If the mass is cooled to 60 °, the machine restores to the lowest speed level back (= Kochrührgeschwindigkeit 1 - which is slower than "min" at the speed levels without temperature switching). So much for practicality ....

Conclusion
The machine has nevertheless some pitfalls and shortcomings. It is not very user-friendly in many ways. I return to my first review:
3 stars = not bad

Very old accessories are not necessarily compatible with the low-speed connection to the CC. But there should be adapters for these devices. I z. B. a bean cutter from the 80s, does not fit. The cream whipper (also from 1980 to 1990), which can be used from butter and milk, an emulsion, ie cream, produce, adjusts the low-speed connection - fortunately. This accessory can be prepared not only cream, but also creams and lotions by very good and stable consistency. This could be interesting for those who manufacture their own cosmetics. The accessory is no longer manufactured, but is * available now and then ay.co.uk used e.

Note for kneading dough:
Pasta I have mixed together in the last few years in the food processor and the Teigkrümel then shaped to form lumps (which protects the food processor, because the firm pasta dough is already a huge burden for each device). The actual kneading, has then taken the pasta roller after a certain rest time. The process will take a little longer because they have to send by the smallest rolling stage the dough one more, until the pasta sheets are as silky smooth as they should be. Only then will you close the rollers and the final phase of pasta production can begin.
The long and short of it preface:
Because the CC has so much power, I dared after a long time again, be expected a Küma kneading dough. Unfortunately, here comes the CC quite quickly reach their limits, as I experienced. Dough 250 g flour, it creates quite well, but in slightly larger amounts, it is scary. Groans and creaks, the machine enormously and the movements of the machine head can have a drive the sweat. The kneading I stopped prematurely as a precaution. And I had the max. allowable amount of flour still nowhere near exhausted: 500 g durum wheat flour plus the amount of liquid needed. One proposed by Kenwood pasta recipe incidentally works with 400 g flour plus ingredients. Even this amount I will not expect the machine in the future. Better to back the food processor method or more operations. The machine is simply too expensive to take a chance. With pasta doughs I've sent over the decades a few food processors in the happy hunting grounds ...
