Just a note at the beginning: I have neither the Gothic series, yet Risen 1 plays, am therefore regard the entirely unloaded). Here we go:

This game clearly belongs in the category "Totally underrated" - in the truest sense of the word. To me it is a mystery why it was in so many tests and reviews cut so bad. Have these people ever bothered to play through it? Or really counts nowadays only if a bombastic graphics and effect fireworks burns in the eyes of the player? Especially nowadays, where can the graphics blender with short season and wall to non-existent story in rows on the shelves, should a game like Risen 2 that has been made with attention to detail, reaping praise without end! But you looked so z. B. also to "Kingdoms of Amalur" (incidentally also a highly recommended RPG!) That many ingenious games simply lost in the crowd. Too bad.

Just to understand: I am not a RPG fanboy, I'm playing well Racing, survival horror, FPS, 3rd person shooter, platforming Runs etc., and have available almost every imaginable console here. Thus, I can say for me to be free of prejudice and objectively answer it to the cause.

Back to Risen 2. Certainly, the graphics are not up to date, and just starting to some of them might feel a little disgusted. But time waits until it roams the first time in daylight in the jungle. I think that is a feast for the eyes! You can tell that people used to make a lot of attention to detail, and because it's me not care that the textures are a bit dowdy, and aufploppen things in the distance suddenly out of nowhere. You can see that after a short time no longer, as it is sucked up formally by the atmospheric environment. Because this is a clear strength that has achieved this match: An atmosphere that is so dense that one can breathe literally! By the time one encounters the first NPC's like Patty and Steelbeard, the binding of the player to the nameless character is getting stronger. And, although the NPC's partly rarely behave stupid, stuck, disappear entirely or in combat sometimes stand around just stupid. In any other game would be the drive you crazy, here, I have always seen it with a wink.

That with the twinkle in his eye is a good transition to the Humor of the game, because of which there is plenty. Often I had to laugh really, what more rare in games during the dialogues and gestures. The synchronization is top notch, although some unimportant NPCs have the same synchronous voice. The entire conversation is so intertwined that you wonder just how they managed that. Because no matter what you have done in what order the NPC's always have the right to award the polygon lips. I've seen quite differently in other RPGs, then there was dialogue that it no longer would be allowed to give, or the NPCs are not received on what you have done, what makes them soulless. Here you can identify total after a few hours with the game world, it's almost as if we personally sail with a pirate ship through the South Seas. Time stop by the old Booze on Takarigua, sometimes stir up the inquisitors of the Sword Coast ... the Risen 2 World is the world of the player. And as I said, the humor and the fact that all the characters have got missed in some ways a soul, reinforce this feeling enormously.

The further you progress in the game, the more compelling it is. And at the latest when you're captain of his own ship, going right from the post. Because from then you can travel back and forth, that perform more than numerous quests, or simply explore the vast landscape to suit your mood between the islands. The quests here are very varied designed, even if they often consist of the typical collection and delivery tasks. Boring was never me anyway, since one always comes to other places. I have done all the quests in the game that I could get - except for one. The remains me unfortunately denied by a bug, which is annoying since it is necessary to obtain one of the 20 or 21 Legendary Items.

While we're at bugs (and I do not mean the Krabbelkäfer on the islands): Yes, they do exist, and yes, they exist numerous. Mir is rarely a game come across that has so many bugs. Yes why is the guy the game then still 5 stars? Because the bugs have annoyed me rarely right, and everything else they outweigh loose. If the golden Risen 2 you follow rule, namely "save as much as possible", while used all 10 memory slots, can not happen. Should we really even get to a point where you think: "Oops, now something is not true", then you just load an older savegame. I had at 52 hours played exactly 2 x In the event that dialogues with NPCs were bugged, and I could not continue playing. So older savegame loaded (which for me anyway just 5-10 min. Apart), and already it worked. I want more than all the other smaller bugs me now not great leave, as I said, I say loud and clear that Risen 2 has a lot of bugs that they have personally but prevented me not mind playing through the game, yet I really the could ruin gameplay.

Musically there are at Risen 2 incidentally could not fault. There are in the game only 17 tracks, the unobtrusive blare in the background in front of him. And that's in a game like art: subtlety. Personally, I found it very boring and tedious, however, and they have therefore hardly ever used, and instead prefer swinging my sword in close combat. Voodoo scepter are also among the main weapons to help you but not a thrashes on enemies, but they manipulated from a distance.
As sidearm there are a whole bunch of guns and all sorts of gadgets, which are called "dirty tricks". So you can throw your opponent salt or sand in the face, or popping him a "rock-hard Gaga nut" to the turnip, which makes him unconscious. That may be quite funny, I used it in the game not once.
The battle system is as I said ansich minimalist, you can not avoid, but only block. For that I was either too stupid, or it did not work, at least my pirate has blocked only in the rarest of cases, but this did not matter, because I have it dealt even more. And at the latest when one has learned to tread, you can keep the enemy at bay so. All in all limited to the fighting on pure Buttongesmashe are for but nice to look at - you realize that here motion capture was used.

Later, you have also the opportunity to get voodoo. Many think so, Voodoo would be completely useless in Risen 2. That's not true! Have ye no desire to take over certain characters in the game by means of Voodoo and to walk in their bodies through the area? Will you not bring two enemies to attack each other or to freeze in fear? Will ye no useful potions and talismans to build, the increase means certain ingredients even permanently your values? Do you want to instead shoot around with a musket, the case of fast enemies (and these are the most) hardly what brings because you do not get to the goals? Well, then Voodoo is really not for you. Nice, I also think that the time of day changes after a cruise, which is logical, but not every game is something to also. So you travel z. B. from noon, and on arrival at the next island, the sun is going down, or it is already night. Those are the many details that make this game so good.

The weather can be quite annoying, especially the storm. And there are plenty of thunderstorms. I have solved this by I just slept so long again and again until I caught a Sunshine Day. Because on those days the environment is something to contribute. The thunderstorms are also implemented great, no question, but after 3 storms in a row you have just fed up. In between, there is not too much, there are also covered and misty day, that's it. The most beautiful thing is as I said in the sunshine.

CONCLUSION:
Risen 2 is not technically contains up to par, many bugs, but weighs the loose with its dense atmosphere, the loving design of the environment and the NPC's and the entertaining quests again. It's just fun to be a pirate! If there is a Risen 3, and it has a similar beautiful setting, I will access without hesitation.

Too bad I can only find that the consoles probably not a patch will come. The worst bugs are in fact long been patched in the PC version, the console versions but have not been adapted by Piranha Bites themselves but by other studios, and where it seems to be a damn whether we need to grapple with bugs, or not , But as you can see me - you can finish the game anyway, and it's still a lot of fun.
