Furthermore, I use occasionally even a GoPro Hero3 and a normal camera images can also record in HD quality. Just as background information which was available as a comparison for the video images.
The video quality that is often described in other reviews as excellent, outstanding, brilliant, I think is quite normal. So what can be expected of 1920x1080 at 30 frames / sec in this price range (not to be compared with the 50.- BilligCams).
The same applies to the exposure with light / dark changes, sun from the front, tunnel-A / exits and driving at night. Outstanding is not the thing. I see at least no significant difference to other brands / types.
And respect. The recognition of license plates, etc., in good weather and 180km / h no problem. In rainy weather in summer morning at 7 clock with 100km / h very borderline. Certainly, since with appropriate analysis software on the PC still some rauszuholen but just looked so with VLC on a monitor 24 times fast which is already very tight.
In my opinion, the supplied 4GB is sufficient to ensure the SD card to a normal use of the camera. The operation is fortunately very simple and kept simple which I welcome for a camera of this type.
One thing that has annoyed me and very nearly led to the return:
is the camera for an external power adapter supplied with power, the camera will start with a selection screen. USB Mode (Mass Storage / PC mode) OK or Cancel.
While at first this was for me, you have to touch the camera and press the Cancel button roll over every time the ignition key. Can surely not be true that you have to do what ever since.
Fortunately that's just a misleading configuration / display, as the camera captures still immediately after booting with the automatic video recording. As long as you do not press the Cancel button there's just no live video display on the small screen. In this context also a pity that the screen does not turn off after a certain time. Not clear to me why the monitor must be on all the time.
In general, one could perhaps consider whether it would make more sense just to start immediately with the display of video (at least for a new generation) and then after 30 seconds, 1 minute or whatever off the monitor. Only when needed, so keep eg when switching a button pressed to go into mass storage / PC mode. In principle, this is not the norm. The camera operates in the car and probably only occasionally connected to the PC. So what is every day repeated umpteen times make as simple as possible.
Further settings are carried out in an easy to reach menu available and without difficulty.
The GPS reception is achieved with me in the car, on the camera position very well and within a few seconds (under 10sec.). The corresponding display on the stored video by date, time, location and speed I think is ok.
The Garmin-Express update on the website of Garmin has worked on any of the 3 PCs trying out. The Express software had to be loaded from an external page. This version of the Express software is updated automatically after installation and launch of Garmin and thus the connected Dash Cam was then recognized 20 and carried out an update. The firmware update from version 2.7 to version 2.9, however, has been no significant improvement.
In summary:
due to the ordinary video images and ease of use, the camera is available in spite of the restrictions outlined for me.
It would be desirable for a few euros and if the technology is more readily available according to use at a higher refresh rate DashCams. The quality and readability is 50-60 frames / sec. much better. Too bad that there is no right choice because at the moment. A GoPro Hero3 is not suitable as dashcam for daily use in my opinion.
