Hunter's writing style is what I find so enjoyable. When you read his best books - Dirty White Boys, Pale Horse Coming, I, Sniper, in my opinion - Hunter's prose is good gosh darn Throughout The Whole Thing. The Second Saladin, like The Master Sniper or The Day Before Midnight, has only moments of the same quality. But They are there and it is enjoyable to see Hunter developing Styles did he later uses as well and Consistently.
Bottom line, if you can not get enough Stephen Hunter, then read the Second Saladin and just moderate your expectations. If you are new to Hunter, start with Point of Impact (so you can be properly Introduced to Bob Lee Swagger) and then continue with the books he wrote Subsequent. Then, if so inclined, you can come back for Hunter's early works.
