Off the power saving function on Linux in the NAS application (LCC)

Even a small supplement for those who want the WD Green already using the Linux NAS and subsequently turn the power saving function to ensure the longevity of the hard drive. This procedure is straightforward and should not cause any problems, but I recommend to create a complete backup of the hard drive.

On Debian it proceeds as follows and first installed these packages:

apt-get install smartmontools idle3 tools

Now we read to control the current value of LCC (last value in the output line is the LCC). Is this after a short use increased significantly (eg 1000), the power saving function is probably constantly active and shortens the life of the hard drive:

smartctl -A / dev / sda | grep '^ 193 "

Off the sleep function (where "X" is the appropriate letter of the drive concerned, ie "a" in the majority of cases):

idle3ctl -d / dev / sdX

Now the NAS must be turned off completely again (reboot is not enough!) For the changes to access. That's it!
