Panasonic TZ7 or the Canon SX200

Wanted a new camera for the holidays with a large zoom range and video function. In addition, it should be as compact as possible. Have SX200 ordered to both more closely to take a closer look, the Panasonic TZ7 and Canon. Of course I can not go into all the points as function similarly here the two products of the major differences and the advantages and disadvantages that are I particularly noticed, I want to tell you here. Please download technical data and instructions for use on the respective website. Since I'm not precisely a plan. As a comparison, I've always tried to do the same motives with the same camera settings as possible and in Photoshop I looked at the results looked at 100% view and can also make printouts. I ask still give my judgment a certain tolerance. Here is my test results.

Image Quality:
Which is in both models (for this price) very good. The Panasonic (a 12 megapixel sensor the same size as Canon's built anyway) with 10 megapixels now not strikingly poorer photos makes like the Canon 12-megapixel. Is the Canon of daylight white balance better, it is the custom white balance with the Panasonic. Of course there are always slight variations in color fidelity, contrast and brightness for different shooting conditions and camera settings, but which recordings are now better or worse, sometimes you really can not say on both models. For 10x15 photos but also for A4 printouts are both ideal.
Panasonic: The noise performance of the Panasonic is a little worse, but moves into an area just in printed images hardly as not, stands out. The display can be zoomed in much closer made recordings. This makes them act always something pixelated and blurred. But in Photoshop at 100% view they are the Canon in every way.
Canon: Here I noticed (compared to the Panasonic) very strong chromatic aberration. Color fringing at the edges, but can be removed with Photoshop again. Of course, is always an added post-processing step.
Conclusion: a tie!

Manual settings:
For quick snapshot of course want to be able to rely on the automatic. Who has time and sometimes want to experiment a little, for there is the manual settings. These include isovalue, focal length, shutter speed and aperture. Especially speed and aperture want to use a lot of photographers. I am also a photographer (for 25 years), to achieve at product photos in the studio or for certain effects with a Speigelreflexkamera (40D or MarkII) uses this adjustment. But honestly I have in between never used with a compact camera on vacation for the snapshot. Shame on me!
Panasonic: speed and aperture can not choose one. In the preset programs but they are taken into account. The camera always assumes that you have no tripod there and so it is from and access to sometimes to a higher isovalue or turn off the flash to.
Canon: Aperture and shutter speed can be chosen. They influence the depth of field and the movement in the picture. Who liked this adjustment, a tripod should always have it.
Conclusion: Here Canon can trump.

Flash:
Bring both light into the darkness. But flash photography seem such artificial. Avoid them if it is possible.
Panasonic: The flash is permanently installed in the housing. Not to cover it during use is purely a matter of habit.
Canon: Well, here at home the ghosts. Many perceive it as a great, other than disturbing, because it folds out basically on power. In Auto mode, I could still understand, but when I'm in the P mode and the flash power down explicitly, he should not show when you turn (similar to SLR). But what he does not. Since the compact cameras anyway hardly have space to keep them when taking in hand can, this flash is of course always disturbing. Even if you turn the camera back and the left index finger on the flash damper, it prevents the retraction. If you then hold the camera loose again, you frightened when the flash is subsequently retrieved by a pulling mechanism still in the case. How long will such a thing? The distance to the housing need of the flash presumably at the huge zoom lens (which turns out considerably smaller at Panasonic, despite almost the same focal length and light intensity) not to cause their own shadow. Then, the flash provides even smallest dust grains, the possibility of penetrating into the housing. Dust in the optics we already could indeed read a lot in other places.
Conclusion: Panasonic wins!

Display:
Here I do not have much to say. With nearly double the number of pixels here is the Panasonic clearly superior. There is great fun the pictures already on the camera herzuzeigen. In addition, you can make clear with a high resolution display also focus areas when shooting. Had the Canon this display could also equal to see the results of the great time and aperture setting better. So you have to wait until the PC is the answer. ;-)
Conclusion: Panasonic wins!

Housing:
Both cameras are, apart from the plastic parts times, the metal housing, ie magnesium or aluminum alloy. Where there are differences, of course, there. Thanks for the info of angeljustus in contribution to the discussion.
Panasonic: makes a solid classical impression. I think it's good.
Canon: Canon's case is slightly larger. Close to the border that you can still leave it pass as a compact camera. Especially if the zoom range extends it's really clunky. It's something stylish but it partially really cheap plastic. The cover flap to the connections might come from a Kinder Surprise. At the handumschließenden chrome surface is from a sharp degree. Since I'm really stayed with Canon better.
Conclusion: Once again Panasonic

Video feature:
Both, of course, only at 720p, but still great quality. As you can the HD camcorder quietly forgotten times.
Panasonic: There are two video formats. AVCHD and Motion JPEG. During the recording you can zoom. This is very nice and slow in and out Zooms. I like it very much. There is a button to activate the video mode. Unfortunately, there is a brief black screen before recording starts. The shooting conditions may have changed slightly. But if I can live with. The recorded stereo sound is surprisingly good and comes in the domestic HD TV properly validity.
Canon: Only one video format (mov). Video mode must be selected with the jog dial.
Too bad that you can not make a video button from the printer button, which you can assign a different function. Optical zoom during recording can not. Is nice but that you can fix the brightness setting in difficult lighting situations.
Conclusion: Difficult, because it is different video formats. But due to the zoom function and the great stereo sound (Canon only mono) then probably the Panasonic.

Handling:
Menu and command dials are easy to use. The Panasonic is faster Ready, but the trip time is slightly longer (we are talking about milliseconds) than the Canon.
Panasonic: Panasonic With the thumb wheel can be used for functions. It is not as cluttered as Canon.
Canon: The menu looks tidier. The tripod thread is not in the middle, but the camera does not tilt to despite using a mini tripod.
Conclusion: tie

Other:
Panasonic: aspect ratios for photos can be set. There are 4: 3, 3: 2 and 16: 9. So if you look at his pictures only on HD television and want to have no black bars, which can equal to 16: 9 switch or make series exposures with different formats. This eliminates the annoying cut with Photoshop.
Canon: CHDK functions. This is really a great thing that the Canon certainly appreciates a lot. Too bad I can only find that one (except for the brilliant Raw update that is really to use) only surreptitiously features that other cameras (eg Panasonic) anyway for that matter. As Rawersatz there is still the possibility of triple exposure with different aperture settings.

What I kept now?
Actually it should be the Canon. Many good reviews and a name that should really speak for themselves. Professionally, I work only with Canon. But! Unfortunately, my three key points on the Canon did not like. The housing, the disturbing flash and video handling. The Panasonic can keep up with 10 megapixels in the image quality is still, is smaller, brings a stable housing and also in terms of video a lot ahead. Since both were the same price-wise (ie no rating point in terms of value for money) I opted for the Panasonic.

What would make the perfect Panasonic now would be the raw mode and a direct video recording without "black" Start. If your not sure since, just ordered both and tests itself. Perhaps we are the opinions on the same.

Now there is also the Sony with Full HD (Sony DSC-HX5VB), which is substantially more expensive. However, determined not bad. Should the same time to test with. ;-)

Hope I could help you
