First of all, I am not a professional, rather the complete opposite. A long-planned trip to Africa was the reason to buy a "real" digital SLR (Canon 5D Mark II) and some lenses. Before choosing which lenses I take to travel to southern Africa, I decided, inter alia, for this EF 70-200mm (stayed at home including the Canon EF 100-400mm L IS USM lens due to the limited flight weight). The lens was then in spite of the weight mostly on the camera. Wide and Macro were rare it. I have often, however, the Canon Extender EF 2x III additionally used. This has the zoom to max. 400 mm doubled. The consequent loss of light was negative only at night waterholes. Two sample images I've set. Tour guides keep a respectful distance from hippos. The animals are also submerged rather quickly. Therefore, here was the EF 70-200mm with converter (Canon Extender EF 2x III) first choice. In gaudy sun also the autofocus worked quickly and quietly. Thanks to the full-frame 5D Mark II can also cut the photo. So get beautiful photos. In the evening, at the illuminated water hole, hit the camera lens team, but without converter terraces all compact cameras by far. Only flying birds were usually too fast for the autofocus and me. High overhang the lens in 4 weeks Africa heat, cold, spray, sand and temperature changes without any problems. Despite the steep price I made the decision for this lens never looked back. Highly Recommended, also for photo laymen.
