Microsoft Sidewinder X8 Laser Gaming Mouse Black (original commercial packaging) (Accessories)

Customer Review

Hello There,
The mouse replaces my somewhat outdated Logitech mouseman Dual Optical.
I also had the (disappointing) had briefly X5 and can therefore draw a direct comparison to the predecessor.
For clarity here a small table of contents:

1. Form: appearance and feel
2. luminous Games
3. Ergonomics
4. Function
5. Conclusion

1. Shape: look and feel

The exterior is very similar to the X5 (refresh), but acts in my opinion due to the nice lighting effects (this soon) and the rear silver "pips" a bit more aggressive. The materials used have a very robust and feel definitely valent as was the case with the X5. For example, the 4-way scroll wheel made of metal.
The plastic used is non-slip and my hand does not sweat even after prolonged play.
All buttons have a pleasant, crisp pressure point and also the volume when actuated personally I think not too loud (similar to Key Volume my Hama SL560 keyboards).

2. LIGHT GAMES

The lighting effects are very nice to look at and come across well even in daylight.
Once the mouse is moved after a certain, in my opinion, far too long, time periods of inactivity or is turned on, the currently selected DPI level button lights up and the information display shows the DPI value for about 5 seconds.
In addition, the rear Cylon-like slot will turn red for about the same time.
When the battery is low, this is signaled by a pulsing light from the just-called slot.
When charging appear, again pulsating, a battery icon on the display and the lights of the slot.
When the battery is fully charged as this will also be displayed by an appropriate symbol.

3. ERGONOMICS

The mouse is, in contrast to the X5, much better in my large hand (am 190 cm tall).
When X5 I had to cramp after a long season feel.
The X8 works here for me something compact, flat and less clunky - based on my hand position (my hand is never completely on the mouse) but I'm generally smaller mice cope better.
For the review of the form of X5 to X8 I can therefore only commend Microsoft.
The thumb buttons are now, as opposed to the X5, convenient to reach and are more than toggle buttons which I saw very ergonomically accommodates.
In general, all important buttons are easy to reach, only the Macro button on the side and the Microsoft Quick Start button is' and this is positive placed out of reach to prevent accidental triggering.
Negative contrast, however, the

4. FEATURE

We come now to the technical 'delicacies' of the mouse.
As a truly innovative, I feel the charging mechanism, since it is realized by a cable and thus allows uninterrupted work or play. Instead of a troublesome charging or battery exchange can here Low battery (which is signaled in good time on the display) are simply snapped the cable by magnetic mechanism to the mouse. This works so flawlessly that by itself under the mouse once you get them close enough latches move the cable to the cable end and easy lifting. Accidental decay of the cable is prevented by the wedge-like shape of the cable end.
If the cable is not needed, it can be wound around the radio receiver of the mouse. This also acts as a storage box for two sets of additional, interchangeable Gleitfüßchen. A difference in the sliding characteristics was subjectively detectable but not on a wooden desk still on a professional gamer Mouse Pad (Fa. Ratpadz).
A few more words on the radio receiver: he looks like a hockey puck and is so great in some. This is often interpreted in many reports as criticism, since this is supposed to be the benefits of a wireless mouse (eg tidy desk, mobility) negates.
My opinion on this: First, do not buy any a wireless mouse to primarily have a cluttered desk I would even claim that the main reason for buying a wireless mouse, the cable freedom is (funny or ?!) 'and, second, are at most ( if not all) wireless mice, which are operated with rechargeable batteries, desktop chargers while the rechargeable Batterien'ähm 'recharge * cough *
Klingelts now perhaps? (If not, these chargers also take place on the desk, dear colleagues report author!)
Ok, fair enough, I have to say: there are wireless mice that do only with a small USB receiver. This of course is practical for laptop users, but since the X8 actually a pure gaming mouse is (and is advertised as such) has been made this mainly for gamers. And most gamers sit happens to be the most time in one place in front of the PC and are not using a laptop to play. Therefore, the argument to the mobility exercise imprecise (OK, maybe is to pack an extra, small, handy object more when moving to a Lanparty, my goodness how tragic!)
And if you want a less cluttered desk necessarily that you want yourself to a wireless mouse with USB Receiver buy (in order to then change regularly batteries may ')!

A small comment yet on the functions of the keys: There are 2 thumb buttons, 1 macro button, 1 left button 4-way scroll wheel, 1 right button 3 DPI buttons 1 Mircosoft Quickstart button.
The macro button allows during the game to take command sequences and assign one of the seven buttons. Unfortunately, the X8 has no internal memory and therefore everything must be recorded from the front at a computer exchange or reinstallation.
Pressing the Quick Start button opens under XP mouse settings (I like that) and the Vista Games Explorer (I find not so good). Sadly here is that of all the Quick Launch button can not be otherwise occupied.
The X8 has, like its predecessor, three buttons below the scroll wheel with which (individually programmable) DPI can be adjusted figures. Each button can be a resolution of 250 dpi to 4000 dpi are assigned (in 250 steps).

A few final words to resolution, and accelerating input lag (delay): the high DPI mice numbers today, I personally for a marketing effect. Nice to have the mouse over a length of one inch (25 mm) 4000 dots dissolve, that can perceive separately. But I personally noticed no difference between 500 dpi and 4000 dpi, except that the mouse is faster at higher dpi number.
Perhaps this may be scanned in difficult smallest-structured surfaces sense machen'aber who ask a mouse pad, or use mouse substrates whose surfaces are structured less than about 6 microns?
This is the theoretical minimum distance between two points the mouse could dissolve at the maximum resolution of 4000 dpi.
To illustrate: a human hair is approximately 10 times thicker!
Most mousepad have structures in mm range, even more so when printed mousepads with any fonts, logos, etc '.
The resolution of this mouse is more than adequate and unfortunately follows today's 'the-bigger-the-better-tail comparison-trend'.
The sampling is more difficult surfaces, according to Microsoft, thanks to BlueTrack Technology, which combines the advantages of optical mice (work on almost any surface) with those of laser mice (high precision). However, whether this is so necessary in practice (so) I dare even to doubt.
Maximum acceleration of 75 G X8 is to say when someone (in theory, very theoretical ') would be able to move with 735.75 m / s² (a space rocket creates about 1/20 thereof) then the mouse could not move more represent.
The major input lag is, according to Microsoft, well below the perceptible by humans value and I can not tell the difference between a wired mouse and the X8 actually: a delay and interference with WLAN are eg due to the 2.4GHz technology used does not noticeably.
Thus, these disadvantages would be eliminated from wireless mice.
Here was for once makes sense (from the perspective of an engineer, not a BWLers!) Researched and developed!

5. CONCLUSION

The X8 is considerably high quality processed than its predecessor, the X5, and combined with the 2.4 GHz wireless technology, the advantages of a wired mouse (no noticeable input lag) with those of a wireless mouse (cable Freedom) and come back to the same simple as innovative loading mechanism in my opinion, to the top of the currently available wireless mice.
The price is, especially with regard to the direct competitor Razer Mamba almost twice as expensive, is more than justified.
I can see the rodents so, despite some exaggerated technical bells and whistles, and would hesitate to recommend him to buy at any time!
