The Nikon D5500 is broadly its predecessor, the Nikon D5300, ident. (Offtopic: 5400 was skipped because the unlucky number 4 in Japan)
The most important innovations of this Nikon Dxxx generation:
+ Easier:
420g (without battery and SD card)
+ Smaller monohull case:
Considering the new dimensions on sheet of paper - about 97 × 124 × 70 mm (H x W x D) - affects the statement almost outrageous, but let me say that in direct comparison with the D5300 is a marked difference. The handle vault has grown somewhat. Meaningful change, the camera is now even more comfortable to hold and significantly more comfortable in larger hands.
+ Touchscreen:
Good news is that we have recognized the potential of mirrorless cameras with outstanding technical features and follow suit. And you have to say that it is the first implementation in a Nikon, this is very well done.
+ 20% faster autofocus than its predecessor
+ Better battery:
to 1900 triggers and over 143 minutes of video (this purpose but no GPS module more! In times of smartphones and Lightroom that it should not be decisive for the purchase.)
All in all, definitely an evolution rather than a revolution but meaningful improvements in my eyes.
Technical details for picture quality, I'm not big describe because, as already mentioned, the sensor is the same as its predecessor's, also offers an excellent image quality as well as dispense with the low-pass filter, perhaps even the currently best sensor in APS-C size (Rumored a SONY Exmor sensor).
Videos are a class of its own, in my opinion, really almost professional quality at a mid-range camera. This has already been estimated in the predecessor and a popular venue. But whoever has before take good videos, which is an additional microphone recommended. The built-in microphone is, despite stereo, a joke. FULL-HD video at 60 frames per second but a dream!
What also surprised me positively, is the enclosed, surprisingly good operating manual for the Nikon.
A little tip to: Who likes it digital, Nikon offers an app for popular tablets and smartphones. Particularly useful in this case is that you can set bookmarks.
Needs to be criticized Although a point but probably have to take these cameras in buying is the slow autofocus. Of course, still needs to be noted that the phase autofocus largely depends on the lens used, so with this Nikon the engine is installed in each of the lenses.
However, the autofocus in Live View is particularly "noticeably slower". This can be annoying at snapshots.
All in all, a dream device that I can recommend wholeheartedly.
Should you have any questions about the device, or know something, please do not hesitate to leave a comment.
Many Greetings!

Quick update:
If you shoot in RAW and Adobe Lightroom previously used, looked at the Nikon D5500 in the tube (up to version 5.5). Now Adobe has brought the sixth of Lightroom on the market, which includes this 'gap'. Alternatively, I can also use the program RAW photographers Capture One (Pro) put your heart, also a very good program for developing photos.
