This Nikon lens was not chosen by me because of its low price. Rather, I wanted to have a good 50 as a standard lens for my Nikon D600.
For sensors in small format full-frame, as in the Nikon D600, Nikkor AF 50mm f / 1.8D has a diagonal angle of view of 47 °. In other words, pictures are taken with a picture angle as roughly equivalent to the natural vision in humans. It therefore occur no unnatural strong alignments in the image as wide-angle lenses.
Nevertheless, the picture angle is large enough to make even landscape shots with good success.
It was important for me at the AF Nikkor 50mm F / 1.8D, that it has a relatively low distortion and high sharpness. This 50 of Nikon has a distortion of less than half a percent, whereas the current models of the G-series distortion of 1.3 - 1.7% have. In many landscapes, a distortion of more than one percent is already clearly visible. - Of course, the Nikon D600, as well as other Nikons, automatically correct the distortion. But it is always with the disadvantage of a reduced focus. Therefore, a low verzeichnendes lens, like the Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm F / 1.8D, continues not to be underestimated.
The AF Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8D is an old structure and has the disadvantage that it in larger apertures (aperture between 1.8 to 5.6 aperture) on the screen is very blurred and out of focus. Only when stop 11 can be spoken in the extreme corners of the image field of sufficient sharpness. In test reports, the AF Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8D is seen as a sharp even at aperture 8 in the corners. - The specimen contained in my possession is at aperture 8 but still slightly out of focus in the extreme corners. If necessary, I correct this blurring on the computer with an image editing program.
Satisfactory in every situation is the bokeh of this lens, that is, the desired course of the blur in the image. But as long as no bright highlights in the scene are present, I am most pleased with the Bokeh achieved. Especially as the deliberate blurring of mine will be developed anyway rather with another lens (90 mm focal length).
A third disadvantage of the AF Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8D is mentioned that it appears to have no remuneration for his lenses. This means it is in strongly scattering light, so in cloudy sky, very faint in the mapping of colors. - Whoever places high demands on the imaging quality, should therefore necessarily buy at the AF Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8D the original lens hood to and a very good, tempered UV filter (B & W with nanocrystal coating). Both parts together cost about 60, - Euro. - I take my photos in RAW format also exclusively on so color corrections on the computer are easy to make.
The three described aberrations of the AF Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8D may be severe for many a photographer. But I see no lens with 50 mm focal length and Nikon connector on the market that the benefits at a price of less than 1000, - Euro has. Either the other lenses (fixed focal lengths and zoom at 50 mm) too much distortion to high chromatic aberrations or are too weak in the focus on the screen. Only the Zeiss 2.0 / 50mm macro for more than 1000, - Euro would be an alternative.
My recommendation therefore: Who wants to take full advantage of the qualities of the AF Nikkor 50mm F / 1.8D, the recordings must edit on the computer - or he buys from the outset a modern Nikon 50 mm as a second lens added.

Good light when shooting!
PS: The Nikon 50 mm is also very good at f to use 22 if you nachschärft very careful when editing the image. The aperture 22 does not offer the newer 50s Nikon!
