The move had two reasons: I needed more space and wished me a faster CPU, I encrypt the folders what computing power required.
Why another NAS from Synology?
Because I am particularly convinced of the reliability and the transition from one model to the next with little effort (reconstruction of the disks and restore the system configuration) is completed quickly and easily.
But in detail:
Operation of the DS1815 + is intuitive and simple. This starts with the graphical user interface, which is called in the browser and all functions represents simple and comfortable and is easy even for the novice to use, because it comes in the familiar "Windows style".
The DiskStation comes without hard drives. I bought 8x WD RED 3 TB because you are 24/7 certified, so (unlike desktop drives) are also suitable for continuous use. For me, the NAS is running 24 hours / day, so the time because there are stored, among other things security camera data, incurred throughout the day.
The hard drives are fixed without screws by means Klip on a plastic holder, pushed into the housing and locked. After you open the memory manager and selects how the panels are to be configured. For this there are various RAID levels with different reliability available. The plates are initialized and set up the raid.
Dannach users and folders are created and managed through the browser.
If you already own a fully furnished Synology NAS, it is sufficient to back up the system configuration to rebuild the hard drive and restore the system configuration. After you have your old settings, data, directories and services on the new NAS is available again. The change takes max. 30 Minutes.
In addition, the diverse services can be set up. Examples which may be only a few highlights that I really like:
- Cloud: it can be set up its own cloud. The data in the cloud directory are then kept in sync with the clients (PCs with Cloud Client Software). This works at different speeds though (depending on your internet connection). DSL 16000 is for a minimum requirement if you want to: Synchronize not only small text files.
- WebStation: The Inter own page can be stored and hosted on DiskStation and the work even (incl PHP and SQL support.!)
- Audio / Photo Station: Pictures and Music by DiskStation can be streamed easily using their own apps. Finally, I can quickly and easily show my photos on the iPad!
- Antivirus Software: Custom antivirus program scans the files
- Encrypted folders: folders can be encrypted by means hardware. Confidential data are thus also safe if the DiskStation gets lost. Was the access to these directories when DS 1812+ still considerably slower than unencrypted, the new Intel CPU ensures Qudcore 2.4GHz and AES NT that you can now make no difference. and much more
The CPU is very fast for a NAS. The DiskStation is equipped with 2 GB RAM and can be upgraded via an expansion slot for up to 6GB of RAM. I have noted in the Kingston KVR16S11S8 / 4 4GB module used, it works flawlessly. But beware: Not every module is compatible. The DiskStation is quite picky.
The hard drives are also in continuous operation never more than 45 degrees. But this comes at a price: The fan can be heard, which is why I do not similar DiskStation in the living room would set up.
For me also important:
There is a very good German-speaking Synology forum, a German-language wiki, so that you can get quick help in case of problems.
But the most important thing: The DiskStation running from day one with no dropouts, trailer or other abnormalities.
