"CODY" is probably the best album of Mogwai. This is certainly the one that best defines the group's music, its essence and power, the one that best corresponds to his own identity and that alone justifies the legitimacy of Mogwai to occupy this place so special on the chessboard of current indie rock. The first efforts of the Scottish (Narcotics "Young Team" and "Ten Rapid"), as impressive as they are, were content blithely continue the explorations of snatched formations by what used to appoint the then post -rock (the famous musical genre where guitars are used to extract sound textures rather than riffs), often worthy heirs training wild guitars of Sonic Youth or My Bloody Valentine. Subsequent albums (from "Rock Action" to "Mr Beast") are of the highest caliber, deserve at least 4 star, but slightly away from the uniform quality "CODY" and the first group identity. With "CODY" Mogwaï no longer content to alternate atmospheric environments stagnant and deluges sonic in a song, but book with wonderfully long crescendo over the duration of the album, gradual climb that leads to the bravura piece Christmas Steps, where guitars are endearing at first, furious and rebellious then. Then calm returns, the loop is closed and it's beautiful! And throughout the album, it is the definition of an own musical style, never heard before: one is completely lost, and we no longer trust our senses. We do not know if the guitars are heavy or light, if the music is a whisper in the hollow of the ear or strong anger that erupts after so much tension accumulated, if we feel the sweet breath of snow almost nightmarish discomfort ... As if we were in REM sleep: quiet and at the same time very agitated. At the end of the album, we're going to ask whether this proposed Mogwaï ignores rather post-punk (what comes after the revolt, that is to say the disillusionment), because ultimately nothing really explode. Mogwai is perhaps simply the only post-punk-rock band that exists in the world.
