o The 1st Delivery: Front lens minimally scratched, several small bubbles in the front and rear lenses, old firmware
o The 2nd Delivery: Lens optically impeccable, old firmware
o Without correction (very) strong vignetting at maximum aperture of Crop cameras
++ Class picture quality, great sharpness (also at 100% magnification still very good)
++ Color reproduction and contrast are also very good
++ Light weight, small dimensions, very good handling
++ Amazingly good to use as Behelfsmakro
+ Good feel and good workmanship, looks solid
+ I find the AF as reasonably quiet, fast enough, and fail
+ The images still have sufficient potential for (creative) machining
- In some places (depending on the photographic situation) very restless Bokeh from f5.6 and higher
- Old firmware with AF issues
- Canon Service
Conclusion: A clear recommendation, very good all-rounder for very little money.
1 star deduction because ...
Made 1,5 years after the announcement of the AF problem obviously still is a very large old stock of lenses with old firmware in the sale. Although Canon will update the lenses free with new firmware, so the expense, downtime and the shipping charge the buyer. After further inquiry, I learn that Canon basically not willing to refund the shipping cost for updating the faulty lenses.

Addendum 08.2014
Meanwhile I put the EF 40 f2.8 at the full frame camera fantastic. The imaging performance, the colors and contrasts, the resolution and the bokeh are very good to almost perfect. Aperture 2.8 also fits, especially as the camera now has significantly more reserves in ISO. The application possibilities of the now real 40mm are really universal for me.
