Customer Review

Looking for a new TV (I had been the Samsung UE40D5700, which now, however, is too small to me) was chosen first on the Samsung UE50F6500. After the first but had problems (which I explain below) and also the replacement device similar defects had, I bought the Sony KDL50W685 and am thrilled. Both devices I'm in the review comparing times.

Appearance:
As for the exterior, I was convinced from the start of Sony. The very thin frame is made of brushed aluminum, which visually very much her power. For this, the also very slim and therefore elegant metal base and the illuminated logo (can be switched off if desired), a total of one has the feeling to have a significantly higher-priced unit.
Also the Samsung I like visually, but does not come close to the Sony. He also has a very thin frame, but this is made of plastic. The stand also acts in comparison very clunky and massive, is also mostly plastic.

Interiors & Software:
The establishment is not much to say. This went for both manufacturers simply by hand, should pose no problem at all even for inexperienced users.
The software differ both manufacturers. First, about the settings: With Samsung you find all settings .. in the settings. While one must always look for something due to many nested (and sometimes little more meaningful) menu items, ultimately but you know roughly where to find everything.
Sony has two setting areas for any reason. Once on the Options button on the remote control, there is settings for Image, inputs / outputs and find sound settings In addition, see Home -> settings for TV signal inputs, channel lists, HDDs, etc. At the beginning, this is confusing and you have to look always times where now what settings can be found. You get used to over time but off - yet solved by Samsung slightly better.

Where I was skeptical before, was the operating speed of the Sony. An acquaintance of mine has an approximately 2 year old Sony from the then high-priced device class and this is genuine grottig slowly. If I've changed a station with the device, I was with my old Samsung at this time already five stations continue, that would be for me at that time a KO criterion was. Here Sony has but massively up and even overtaken Samsung. The television reacts fast and ragged in menus, also alternate images goes well out of hand, here needs Samsung partly. Longer, especially in the SmartTV functions it jerky at Samsung often noticeably. Even the Sony takes its time here, but as a whole but ne corner faster.
Where would we be in the SmartTV functions: Here, both televisions take little. Samsung has clearly more apps, etc., but most of it is nonsense that no one needs. The major apps of VoD portals have both devices, and so wrong impression: Even the Sony has a lot of apps. In addition, the SmartTV-range Samsung looks very cluttered and partly. Not really mature (the mentioned bucking etc.). Overall, here are both manufacturer for me right on, although as mentioned Samsung Apps has more .. Only honest - need doing but no one ..;) The only thing I miss at Sony, is a Spotify Connect app which available on the Samsung's (but lame as anything else).

Picture:
Of course, the most important criterion. In short: Both devices provide a very good picture because, both producers, however, differ a little. The Sony is very natural colors there and thus the more beautiful picture for me. Samsung has the knalligeren colors as they shoot quite high contrasts. Also looks not bad, but the Sony acts from her picture round simple and enjoyable. It must be said that through various settings much can turn here. Therefore, as I said, a very good image provide both manufacturers.
What makes Sony better the representation of SD material. Sony manages to deliver a surprisingly good image without artifacts and pixel mud. The reason for this is that the SD picture is a little soft drawn, than Samsung. The SD picture is Samsung is thus theoretically a bit sharper, but partly by. Very pixelated, which is why you have not won anything since, on the contrary.

In addition, often micro stuttering in the image struck me at Samsung (now independent of SD & HD), especially with fast camera movements, which bothered me partly. Very (of which you can also find a lot on the network).

When watching football Sony is the way top, no streaks, no retightening, everything is presented clean and perfect. For Samsung I can say anything here, have looked with this no football.

3D:
Samsung uses active 3D, Sony passive 3D. Personally, I prefer neither techniques and therefore can not say too little, plus there is already enough on the net. I notice no annoying flicker when active-3D also the weight of the glasses does not bother me. Annoy me doing the assets that the picture is significantly darkened (it is the spectacle of guilt), also should not light sources to be switched on in the room. But one has full HD 3D, while you have the passive maintain a certain pitch, otherwise you can see the horizontal lines (it can not but explain better then you can already see what I mean). But I have a feeling that is a little better in the passive, the 3D effect. Anyway, for me, both devices were equally well here, I could not name a precise favorites.

Clouding, Flashlights, banding, DSE etc .:

Let us has lost to the point where Samsung for me. Both devices manufacturer suffered massive Flashlight effect. I knew this from my old Samsung, which had in the two top corners, but was not too distracting and actually recognizable only when viewed from the side. The two F6500 this was but the center of the image (more precisely, out of the frame, in which the LEDs are placed seems light white in the picture) and was still recognizable, making the Samsung was useless for me when viewed from the front, as it seemed for dark images permanently from below a cone of light in the picture. The first F6500 there were even three, two up and one down, the second F6500 it was just one of below, but as far as seemed above for by. This has severely impaired the TV "experience". Both devices also suffered Clouding, but in this case this was the lesser evil. All the way at brightness level 11 (from 20). From the front, it would somehow have been bearable in doubt, from the side, it was really bad and unfortunately I watch often times sideways on the TV when I'm sitting at the desk and not on the sofa. In addition the second Samsung had a strong Dirty Screen Effect (DSE).
The Sony How does it look? Nearly perfect! Seen from the front the picture is perfect. No Clouding, no Flashlights, no DSE, no banding - just great! If you look from the side, there are minimal Flashlight from the bottom right corner. The reason is that Sony installed in the corner LEDs and something may occur to a lot of light. Samsung solves this by there omit LEDs - for you in bright pictures in the corners then small black spots. Back to Sony: The whole thing is so small that it really does not bother me. Therefore, I can only say: top! I'm excited!

Sound:
First, I am running the sound through my and hifi, the TV is the AVR (Yamaha RX-V771) connected. For me, both TV sound the same bad ...: D For me, the integrated speakers were both devices nothing, a difference between Sony and Samsung, I could not make out here. If the sound through ne hi-fi system is not used, however, it should be okay. Really a lot you can not expect from such small speakers but.

Conclusion:
Both units are in principle (very) well. Both have a good appearance, a good image, good 3D and a good software. In almost each of these areas is Sony but for me a tad better, the device works just evolved in Samsung I often feel that they do not even take 100% mature technology on the market. Completely down by Samsung for me but because of the described Flashlight- & Clouding problems, so he gets only two stars.
Sony I can in good conscience give five stars, for this price, it is an absolutely ingenious device!
