I bought recently this WD NAS and my router (FritzBox) connected. Had previously directly to the USB port on the router a WD MyBook Essentiel Edition (WD RE). Have promised me from the NAS a speed boost, which is also there. While WD EE the USB port of the FritzBox 3170 only 1.2 MB / s has managed (whether accessed via WLAN or LAN), are now with the NAS WD World Edition data transfer rates of about 4.5 MB / s n WLAN, and at 10.5 MB / s via LAN. Since the router has no Gigabit port, I therefore reach the maximum possible speed. If you hang on the other hand an external hard drive to the USB port of the NAS WD WE so you can address them again with only about 1.2 MB / s, so this brings no speed advantage compared to direct connection to the USB port on the router. The bundled software is not required. Simple Network Drive in Windows Explorer and enter the IP address of the NAS. This gets you z. B. also in the Windows Explorer under Network, then My Book WE highlight, right click, properties. For me, the bundled software also brings no added value. So although you can use the NAS as an iTunes server, but I could produce only list views of the songs. So no grid or Cover Flow view. Covers are not visible (regardless of the ID3 tag version). So that is not useful for me. Even the Copy Manager to data from the NAS to copy to a device connected to the USB port External hard drive is not faster than the Windows standard tools (1.2 MB / s, so inexplicably slow for me). Since it comes with "robocopy" as far. Conclusion: The hard disk has met my expectations to speed. Those who are familiar need no extra software, operation is simple. Small drawback: The USB port of the NAS is too slow.
