The charging pad is connected to the supplied AC adapter and the S5 works as follows:
When Galaxy S5, the back shell is exchanged for the inductive bowl. The internal metal plate leads to contacts that are pressed in the S5 to lying against contacts. The applied current is evaluated in, so that the charging process is started. All this is fully remote controllable. Also, the charging pad has obviously a software-controlled charging electronics because blinks depending on the status LED display or the color changes.
So you put the S5 on the charging pad, the following message appears: A wireless charging pad charging rules: wireless charging running ... Also the S5 generates a corresponding sound. The software is so involved in the charging process. Just because there is a small problem that apparently many as not reliable Laden describe: This part of the software can actually lubricate or become unreliable even with the latest firmware of Galaxy S5. Then, the S5 hardly detects the charging pad, so that the loading does not take place, even though the optimal S5 is on the charging pad. But again to restart the S5 leads to the correct behavior, namely a highly reliable detection of Ladepads. The orientation (upper or lower part of the S5 on the pad) is irrelevant. It always works as long completely reliable until the software in S5 abschmiert for inductive charging. This has happened with me after two days, since for a week again absolute reliability.
What is not quite as nice: While charging wired always result in that the battery is charged to 100% when the cable is pulled out, so that is the inductive charging different: The software recognizes the charging status and stops it at 100% , When this takes place at night, consumed the S5 power from the battery, and allows the capacity to eg 95% fall in the morning.
When the charging cable S5 displays Yes when fully charged, the message that the plug should be pulled. With inductive loading that happens so to speak automatically under software control, and the charging pad begins to flash yellow. So probably will the battery be protected. In this respect I think that's ok.
Important to know: The new inductive back (shell) is harder and thicker than the original. In order for the light to be thin and S5 becomes a legally wuchtigem device, which personally but does not bother me.
For me an absolute must for the S5. Only the buggy software in S5 needs some corrections.
Update 10/01/2015: Oh, what was that? Suddenly the S5 will not charge and I seriously thought the charging pad was defective. Thankfully only the back had solved with the induction plate a little bit of S5, so no contact was. Pressed -> snapped, invites again like the first day. Still absolutely great. I would never again have to load my smartphone with cable !!!
