Orbsmart® S82 Android 4.4 Quad Core Mini PC

Perfect, the box does what I expect, multimedia, and. No dropouts Those who expect the full Androidfunktionalität, will be possibly disappointed because of course the touch screen functions are not modeled. Many app but are designed exactly it. So can Google Maps does not zoom out what is happening on your tablet or phone with two fingers.

But the box is supposed to be with me no tablet or Playstationersatzt but play music and movies and stream, and the low power consumption and without Mausfrickelleien. And that also makes them with flying colors.

Power consumption:
Unfortunately I have only an ammeter which dissolves at 0.01 Ampere, corresponding to I measured 2.2 W. The following values:
Standby 0.00A (In operation, shot a USB Memory Stick, the home screen: 0.00A
Shot in operation, USB Memory Stick, the home screen: 0.02A (4.4W)
Playing Movies: 0.03A (6,6W)

The USB stick draws significant power (if you can call so 0.02A) and is remarkably hot, much hotter than the PC. I assume that the box permanently stick on the multimedia content scans, unless it is in standby.

Operation:
The supplied remote control is not as bad as everyone says, as long as we confine ourselves to the core functionality of the box with the appropriate apps. These are for me playing library content (ZDF, 3Sat), youtube videos, videos of other streaming services, play local videos, playing local music. The remote control offers
Off, standby, Wakeup, up / down / mute, track forward, track back, Home, Back, and Menu. There are also directional arrows and OK 4 direct keys. These are media (opens a file browser), music (music opens the app), Web (open the browser), and app (left me with no function).
Play and Pause button missing, unfortunately.

Mouse:
The remote control can be switched in the Mouse mode, it then controls the mouse with the direction keys, which is due to the system cumbersome. Therefore, it is advisable to connect a mouse.

I tested this a normal Bluetooth laser mouse, and the Airmaus TeckNet® X332 Bluetooth
The Bluetooth pairs working properly. The cursor has a delay of 300ms compared to the physical movement. This is an Android issue, described in a bug report. This delay also makes the operation with the Airmaus troublesome only with the normal mouse, it affects not so disturbing. I have tested the Airmaus also on a Windows PC, there is the mouse operation by Airmaus significantly lighter and works quite well. Nevertheless, the operation via Airmaus is fundamentally more difficult since even cause slight movements of the hand movement of the mouse cursor and you can easily share a link verreißt when you press the mouse button.

So I can only recommend the use of a normal mouse.

Keyboard:
I have connected a iPazzPort TM Pro Mini Bluetooth that works great. Changing the keyboard layout in German QWERTZ is well hidden, but is quite simple: Settings -> Language & input -> Keyboard & input -> Hardware TO -> Back -> scroll down to physical keyboard -> Select your own keyboard -> Set keyboard layouts ,

External USB remote control:
As the box disappears in my closet, I shot my old HAMA MCE Remote. This allows the small receiver out of the cabinet lead. I love this remote control, as it covers a large area and with me still works around the corner. The following functions go with the Orbsmart out of the box: Standby, Play, Pause, Next, Prev, Fast Forward / Rewind (app dependent), direction keys, mouse emulation, Back, OK. Wakeup unfortunately only goes sometimes. There is also the hot-keys do not app (Media, Music, Web or APP). But players to operate the music the remote is super and otherwise can be operated so that the box.

Who wants to demonstrate the non-functioning keys can change the layout here too, which means but copying and editing keylayout files, not for everyone.

Already installed apps:
The most important for me at the moment are Apps

XBMC: Perfect for listening to library content as well as video and music player of good use. Also playing from network shares (Windows / NFS) and UPnP.
In addition, the app offers a wide range of Medidatheken. Not all work, but that is mostly attributable to the supplier. ZDF incl. 3sat does not work great, but ARD. The ARD own app does not work currently.
XBMC can be fully and properly using the remote control.

App called Music:
Recognizes the contents of the USB stick automatically, automatically reads the contents of playlists that are stored on the USB stick in the M3U format, a. However, the box must be turned on when you plug in the Sticks. We also accelerated by invoking the File Browser reading.
BUG: The value stored in MP3 Artist is not displayed correctly.
The app can be great use of what is silent on loud / / mute / play / pause / next / prev refers to the Hama Remote Control. M3U files can be created with the Windows freeware tool Mp3tag. Windows Media Player playlists are supposed to work as well, got it but not tested.

MX Player Pro
Super for playing movies, can be completely controlled with the remote control. Fast forward / rewind is not with the mouse but you can jump to any position from the film.

4K Movie Player
Also great for watching movies, also be controlled with the remote control, here comes even the fast forward / rewind. 4K content I have not tested.

Media Center
App to play DLNA / Airplay
Can be fully with the remote control, but only with the direction keys, it does not go the Play / Pause, Next / Prev, Volume up / down / mute buttons. Too bad. Thus, the TV must be in playing music to operate on.

Browser
The default browser works great, but you need at least a mouse, remote control is pure chore. The embedded browser Flash Player for example, content plays films from liquid, but is something hakelig to use.

GMail
This app I need on the Orbsmart not really, but have a look inside anyway. To use the app you definitely need a mouse who wants to write even shoot a keyboard. Otherwise, that is very tedious.

Hardware
Wireless internet is actually a bit weaker than many are accustomed, but with sufficient care, it has been going. Compared to my Asus Ultrabook weaker by about one bar.

HDMI connection goes right away, with sound that is even sync with the video.
The multimedia output provides stereo sound, but this is out of sync with the audio through HDMI. That does not bother if you want to shoot an additional facility.

The digital audio output I have not tested, just as AC3 or similar.

Conclusion:
As a pure multimedia box with remote control box is to use super, everything is footed and work right away without much configuration effort and is usable even for laymen. Who needs the browser should at least connect a mouse, who wants to tap much, should also have a keyboard with purchase. From a Airmaus I think currently combined with the S82 because the mouse is not much delay. However, if you need a lot of special features should bring a lot of time and know how Android. Basically everything can be like on an Android Phone make, it is nevertheless limited because the finger gestures can not currently simulate the mouse and keyboard (or I habs just not found).

For many rich functions for playing music and videos from local or from the local network, as well as web content like YouTube and co. and other free streaming services, and it is thoroughly recommended the S82. Configure the S82 it is not difficult and it also does not take much time for it. What goes beyond that required more time and Recherge Apps.
