I have some experience with all kinds of NAS / SAN of any manufacturer.
Also various extere housing for single HDD I had been in use.
Package Contents:
ICY BOX
Power Supply
Voltage cables for the power supply
Screws for the drive cage
USB 3.0 connection cable
short but sufficient paper Description
For the first impression the housing was very easy, very small and very handy.
The power supply is specially designed and. In size of a 60W power supply for a netbook, or a similar low-power device
The connection of the power supply takes place via standard bipolar voltage cable.
On the housing of the rear box are:
Voltage terminal of the power supply
A toggle switch for ON / OFF
The USB connector for connecting to the computer
The toggle switch for the RAID config (+ sticker with a short description for the Config)
Vertical ventilation slots
The HDD cage is (which are at the bottom of the housing) with the huele connected with two screws.
The shell (which is placed over the HDD cage, has only one connector, which is connected via ribbon cable to the front LED.
The front LEDs are glued with hot glue into the housing.
The installation of two HDDs goes fast.
Each one puts a HDD into the slot (here are the side / bottom rails).
Then this HDD is mounted with two screws per side.
The same is then done with the second HDD.
After the hard drive cage with the two HDDs is simply pushed back into the envelope and inserted the ribbon cable for the LED side of the HDD cage.
(Info: this cable is in the first commissioning and dismantling of the shell of the cage is not connected - So do not worry, it pulls from nothing!)
Raid configuration.
Either JBOD / Raid0 / Raid1
JBOD - twice HDD - two drives
RAID0 - Stripping for faster performance without redundancy - two times HDD - A drive - is a HDD is defective, you can no longer access the data !!!
RAID1 - Mirroring - twice HDD - a displayed drive with Data Security - If one HDD, so you still have access to the data !! - Both HDD defective - all the data gone!
If you have set the RAID configuration, press the reset button for about Raid 3-4Sekunden and simultaneously switches on the device.
(Here it must not depend on the PC.)
There the Raid will be created.
Then you can (if the LED front lights clean red, which I find very strange indeed, why one has chosen here Red) infect the box to the PC.
USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 is of course possible.
In the Computer Management Disk Management (for Windows 7), you watch depends what disks you have a new disk with more or less large numbers of inactive drives.
This you have to delete and then create a new logical drive / Rename (optional) / format (quick format is sufficient).
Then use is possible as with any external hard drive.
(As with all drives, you can choose here as well, which drive letter you want!)
This all sounds quite long, but incl. Unpacking and mounting the Fesplatten to using lasted in reality for me no 10minutes.
I had no way to make a performance test, but that would also make very little statements, since the highly dependent on USB2.0 / 3.0 and the hard disk type.
Why I chose this box and not with fans?
I wanted a silent box for a backup.
The box runs not through (which I can not recommend it also because of the heat generation of HDDs) and is intended to be as quiet as possible.
The built-in hard drives are really everything you hear.
This can be heard but neat, because the noise insulation of housing is available only through the construction.
The operating noise of the HDD is reduced only through the sheath by a few percent!
(Play but for me and weekly backups not matter)
Does she perfectly for me with 2x 1TB Seagate and Seagate 2TB 2x.
If you want to have such a box, which runs continuously, you should be the model with fan buy from ICYBOX.
This protects the hard drives before Hitzetot!
In an operation of 30mins excessive heat on the housing could be detected!
Processing:
Very briefly - I find that the box is not very well made - gaps do not fit 100%.
Also it acts dismantled bit cheap. The but it is also for this and therefore does not matter!
The function is given and the gaps interfere in the assembled mode not (you can see it does not).
Description:
Yes, it is a description of a few steps enclosed for operation.
You should also create a Lys steps and have no problems.
(It would then probably take but rather 20-30Minuten until you can use it.)
Negative (though not really):
The power supply is very low and there is also a status LED very long, although it has been unplugged it.
This points to a very favorable feelings.
So I would advise you the power supply, which is also warm (not hot) is not to let infected permanently.
Otherwise you could one day have a defective NT.
I am satisfied with the purchase and would recommend the box to anyone who uses it for regular backups.
(Long-distance runner is terrible (no fans) and for that she is also not provided!)
I hope you have helped to make a decision.
I'm going to upload some photos to the box.
