The other very important feature of this story arc is participation in scenario with Geoff Johns, director Richard Donner. Yes, you read right: The same one who staged in 1978, the famous film adaptation with Christopher Reeves actor in the title role! To appreciate "Last Son" at fair value, we must know the following: Richard Donner could complete filming of "Superman II" in 1980. He was expelled trays by producers to artistic differences. The film was well finished by another, and reassembled by producers. Obviously, this final version betray the original vision that Donner and his writers (Tom Mankiewicz and Mario Puzo, the writer of the "Godfather" Coppola!) Had initially planned, in 1978, to form a whole with the first film. So, if you remember well, the introduction of the first film showed the three criminals on the planet Krypton, "General Zod", "Ursa" and "No", about to be judged by Jor-El and his peers before being locked in the "Phantom Zone" (represented on screen by a mirror-like prison!). This scene allowed to link with "Episode II" and demonstrated that the authors had from the start envisaged the film franchise in the form of several feature films.
More of a scene of the second film by Donner were removed, and finished forgotten. But for more than twenty-five years, fans demanded a remount of this suite as it was intended. To celebrate the DVD release in 2006, these fans were finally heard, and the director was able to go back with her spread the film scenes (except some, lost forever).
And in this same year 2006, Donner was approached by the publisher DC comics to transpose this story as a miniseries. Thus was born the project "Last Son".
But there is also Geoff Johns. Johns is the writer's flagship DC. This is the "suggestion box" capable of matching all events scattered throughout the various continuities in a perfectly coherent. With its contribution, "Her last" is not just a remake of "Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut" (title of the film put together by the director). Rather, it is an ambitious proofreading, allowing Johns, since he is the architect of all of this universe flagship series, digging the Superman mythology. Thus, the events during the crossover "Infinite Crisis" performed to erase some embarrassing events of continuity, Johns can afford to develop the story of the "Last Son" as if the arrival on earth of these criminals Kryptonian was held for the first time.
Together Johns Give imagine a well-constructed and poignant story, making a tribute to the films of the first and allowing the second to extend its vision of the Superman universe, and of his lineage. The focus is on emotion and individual choices. The characters exist!
The story is not free of defects. The pace is so rushed that forced a highly compressed narrative. The perception of time and lack of credibility or substance, and all would have gained some exposure to develop scenes. For example, many events take place "out of scope" through titles on newspapers. So it seems rather inconsistent to see any powerful "JLA" fall in an instant under the onslaught of General Zod (not including the role held by Supergirl figurante -a single box - decidedly remaining a very embarrassing for character most share of scriptwriters approaching the universe of "Man of Steel").
Still, I enjoyed reading this, seeing me, clearly, the DC comics editions took very seriously the derived film adaptations of their universe, to the point of integrating them in their continuity!
In vf, these episodes were published by Panini Comics editions in the magazine "Superman & Batman" (No. 9-12).
