The first thing one should however note that this objective - (my opinion, not bad) in direct comparison to
Kitobjektiv EF-S 17-55 mm keep to a regular "Klopper" in his hand.
- Weight 430g to 190g
72mm to 66mm length to 85mm, as well as at full focal length 111mm -
68mm to 82mm diameter -
That's respectable and should be considered in any case, since you otherwise an in itself quite compact camera (EOS 350D, 400D) has. One should also take into account when choosing a compact pouch.
Processing and soundness of the lens can be nothing to be desired. Finally, the front lens stands still and you can use a polarizing filter. There is a Zoomlock with which the lens can be locked at 17mm (practically in the bag, due to the length).
The first handle on Zomm's brought some confusion, because the zooming "mirror" is - a rotation (in the weft direction) clockwise to increase the focal length, or the distance. A structural feature, to which one must get used to.
The distance range covers almost the the Kitobjektivs - to get a cm to get closer.
Not quite uninteresting is the fact that the lens focuses on the short EF bayonet - can thus be physically connect also on full frame cameras (analog or 5D). However, it takes with it an extreme vignetting in right and left field over the entire focal length range in purchasing.
The AF motor is faster than that of the kit lens, but it is also much louder and has a slightly unpleasant noise. The high light intensity but increases the sensitivity and reliability of the AF's.
Nevertheless start both lenses at 17mm, the Tamron can image a larger field actually, is because at about 3m distance about 50cm horizontally - very important to me. At the telephoto end of course goes back some lost (50mm to 55mm).
The only thing in my opinion, Alternative offers three times as expensive Canon 17-55mm IS USM, which however still larger and heavier (645g) is, but comes up with excellent optical performance, a truly quiet AF and the excellent image Stabilizingsystem.
Conclusion: for the ambitious canonists this Tamron a great asset, when there are the bargain very large price differences. The light intensity is a great profit and loss of depth of field at full aperture an often desired effect. Autofocus could be quieter, to the mirrored operation have to get used. I do not regret my purchase - I can only give not all 5 star and 4.5 there is unfortunately not ....
