TB NAS drive with convenient features

WD My Personal Cloud and Cloud NAS 3 TB (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

The drive is nice, it's still important. It vibrates a little rest but nothing serious.

Installation is VERY easy. The instructions are in the box, you should download a tool on the WD website is very well done and really easy. Then do not panic too quickly if it does not work, it puts a little time to start.

The interface is easy to use, including for telephone etc. Caution default there is no password so users on your local network see everything, everyone. It's easy to add one. It's easy to interface its DLNA TV too. It's easy to do all in fact.

Performance-wise it's pretty disappointing I must admit, but I do not know if it's due to my box or disk. You have to connect to a 100Mbps ethernet jack (red or yellow on Livebox2 Orange) but despite that I measure only 21Mbps of transfer (NB must be x8 for the measures in MB / s = MB / s that are more 'Popular'). This means transferring a 200MB file (200 'mega-byte') will be at 21Mbps = 2.6MB / s and will therefore take 76 seconds. For comparison, with a USB3 drive connected directly to the PC, I = 560Mbps is about 70MB / s so that the same file will be read in 2.9 seconds (with Speedtest measures and the hand tool).

This performance is enough to watch a movie on the network (on DLNA TV or tablet), but it's a bit just to "wander" in the film (fast forward etc.), the interface is not ultra Reactive (the film remains fluid). To exchange files "massive", the performance of my local network is a bit limited. So think about your network installation before investing ... Eg make a full backup of a PC with an HD 1TB, well, you still have to provide within 105 hours of transfer is a short week. 20GB will transfer "only" two hours, it is relative.

Advanced functionality side, FYI there are no scheduled RAID installation (I do not see the point home, it's better two versions stored in physically separate locations to counter the risk of fire or flight). But there is a SSH or FTP server access for the more adventurous.

Finally, there is a "hotline" effective and available at decent hours. This is a plus, obviously.

To conclude:
- If you need a NAS, if you know what it is, if you want a friendly and easy to use tool, with sharp features, this model close to perfection, and has the good taste to be nice and not very expensive.
- But perhaps like me you thought to need a SIN; On reflection, this solution is a bit slow for me and I will continue to mainly use USB3 disks (30 times faster anyway). I will also ask to move to the Orange Livebox Play that is in gigabit ethernet, in principle this should greatly improve matters (x10) but remain slower than USB3.

At this stage of my use I put the product as 5 *
- Excellent price (I paid 199EUR delivered to 3TB on the manufacturer's website, Amazon will soon offer the same price with unmatched service and delivery service)
- Ok features, easy to use, suitable for people who know nothing about art and to people who know very well
- My dissatisfaction '(relative) comes from the poor performance of network access.

EDIT: PLAY tested with the Livebox has a gigabit ethernet connectivity in: 35Mbps. Thus the performance of this drive is especially apparent limitation of the disc.

EDIT2: only for the adventurous: it is possible to connect an external drive on the NAS drive (USB3). If using Windows to transfer files from one disk to another, the transfer is very slow. But we can ausssi enable the SSH on the NAS drive and use it to transfer files. So I measure a speed of approximately 200Mbps (30 seconds to transfer 750MB which is correct). It's not very convenient but it helps out.

A second way to = connect the drive directly into the network connection of the PC; then we can achieve a speed exceeding 300Mbps (but this is not very practical either).

EDIT3: really limited disk performance is problematic. After extensive testing in cooperation with the WD support (but not very competent solution), I returned the disc and made myself repay. I recommend this disc only to persons who have not AT ALL need for performance and / or can connect a PC directly to the Ethernet Disk for all large transfers. This disc does not meet my needs but may suit others. I get off my rating to 3 *.
