Four great musicians, stainless standard, a legendary club, a famous record label ... and ultimately a huge disappointment. It is not the great Lee Konitz but a pale ghost who worked in these sessions of Birdland. A saxophonist shadow struggling physically and technically with the rebuilding of themes that contribute nothing. A ghost who has petrified Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and the public. The first hearing is devastating especially if one starts with the first standard Lover man parcularly painful. Another reviewer was talking about the age of Lee Konitz. Is the disk too? In all cases, a record that brings nothing to the work of four musicians and is completely 'dispensable'.
