We dive back into the 19th century and a world that Jane Austen to which reference is made throughout history. While in Pink Lady and Miss Darcy, two hearts to take (you can find my review HERE), we found the characters of Jane Austen, here in this novel, references are made with respect to books that the main character, Lady Violet Templeton bed
I would say the style is slightly different and gives us a glimpse of the characters also different and more "saucy". This does not diminish the talent of the author transports us into a world at once so particular but at the same "modern enough". I mean, Lord Edward and Lady Violet often give in to their drive while managing to respect the rules of decorum so rooted in their time. One thing is certain, these two will not leave you indifferent.
I loved the character of Violet Templeton has two facets. We discover from the beginning of the novel trying to steal in the Lord Edward office and doing surprise, she lies about his identity and lets steal some kisses. We may think that the morals and behavior of this young lady is more than frivolous. However, we soon discover that the girl is suffering from a tic (nowadays, we could talk about OCD): it can not help unconsciously steal any object. She struggles but unwittingly gives his impulses she does not know the cause and no cure have offered. But his scenes in the orphanage as a whole reveals the other day, it's a generous young woman who takes to helping the poor and which is transformed to the contacts of these young children it will end in its own way save by their tragic fate.
So he needed a character to match this extraordinary character and Lord Edward is the perfect candidate. Throughout the novel, he continues to have a frivolous behavior, one might find unworthy of a gentleman of his rank, but is actually dictated by emotions in the rough. For Lord Edward and Lady Violet are like two magnets that attract and repel. They offer us moments as delicious, sensual that funny. They like to tease, to play tricks but this proves how much they have affection for each other. You will see 3 modes of communication between them, but I let you discover for you not spoiler history.
This novel is full of other characters that I could describe as secondary characters as they are a central pivot of the plot. Violet's mother, Lady Susan of Marre, is a character just as endearing as it saw many events throughout this novel. This is a caring mother, loving that will reveal dark secrets and thus bring happiness to his daughter. Thanks to Lord Clive Pembroke, Duke of Brigdewater, she will live a real turning point in his life. The latter will be constantly assisted and advised by his lifelong friend Lady Shirley Somerford, Countess of March. It will not only help her friend but also to his son Edward Lord to lead him on the right path. Finally, what would a novel without the character we love to hate? Here it is Lady Marjorie Greville, who has no desire to go on the road to redemption. His rancor, hatred and desire for revenge will push to commit irreparable acts not only against its enemies but also against those it is supposed to love.
In short, you have a great time with these characters that will make you switch from laughter to tears. Lhattie Haniel again succeeded brilliantly us deliver a credible story and so steeped in Austenienne time.
