iRiver - Story eBook Reader 2GB (Electronics)

Customer Review

My first experience at the iRiver Story eBook Reader

Questions before you buy:
The keyboard is English in QERTY style. Üöä does not exist and therefore falls well for the search. A model with German keyboard I have not found on the Internet. IRiver provides no information on the German side but only on the international. The problem described here with PDFs I can not understand. PDFs with> 40MB opened easily.

Scope of supply:
- The Reader itself
- USB cable
- Little documents (manual is on the Reader)

Transferring documents:
The reader must be switched on before it is connected to the mini USB cable to the PC. The selection on the screen then offered Laden "or PC connection". When switched off, the Reader is loaded when you connect to the PC via USB this. Also invites the reader further when it is turned on while reading. The internal memory and the SD card are displayed as drives. The files are simply draufkopiert. All I have tried only to the PC. Possibly I'll say a little comment for MacOS X.

Read PDF documents:
For me, the PDF format eBook standard and very important. For PDF documents, there are the following support:
- Zoom in fine increments and fixed aspect ratio. If you use this function, a selection area you can first move the upper left corner (top left and bottom right), and then a selection of bottom-right corner in the same way. Similar to a free setting tool of a paint program. The aspect ratio remains firmly bonded to the display.
- The contents of a PDF is recognized and can be accessed via Options ".
- Leaves is possible with the forward and back button, which can be found on both sides. Pressing the button for longer goes the reader not by each side but shows the page number below. The speed increases with the longer pressing. This makes it possible to quickly reach high page numbers.
- Bookmarks can be set.
- Turning the screen is possible in only one direction. This is either the keyboard down or right.
- The Search within the document is also no problem, as soon as it is opened.
- An alternative would be the EPUB format in which the text adjusts to the screen. A converter from PDF to EPUB I could not find so far, but is not absolutely necessary.
- Addendum: With the "reflow" the text of the PDF document to fit the screen. A convert to EPUB is therefore unnecessary for me.

Management of books:
There is a view of all the books "or the option on the directory structure to select. In both views, the search for book titles is possible. It can books be deleted.

Other:
The MP3 listening is nice and works as expected flawlessly. The device feels good and the buttons have a (for me) nice click. The recording function with the microphone and the notes I did not try. The text is easy to read but the rigid format of a PDF is forcing me to zoom to a pleasant readability on the 6 "display to obtain. This is generally at the size. If you read technical books or books in general that is larger than a paperback book, should to consider taking a model with a larger screen. The rotation function of view makes it possible to still larger formats easy to read.
The housing is white, matt and a bag should be ordered. For the price that should actually be there, but it is not.

My Opinion:
I am satisfied with the purchase and would recommend the device. Especially the open nature makes special software superfluous. Therefore, the Sony Reader fell out of my selection. The last firmware is from July 2010 and although I could not see any error, it reassures me that iRiver has an active product maintenance. Checks even the support behavior of all readers provider! One shortcoming there, although it does not bother me but for others could well be the decisive factor is the stability of the housing. Does one light pressure (bend) the casing creaks slightly. This occurred to me when I took the reader on the lower right corner in the hand. When reading, etc. you do not realize this and the device feels sturdy and comfortable.
Although other readers offer WiFi or 3G, you should consider whether you want to refer the books from the online shop or other sources has no Internet connection needed. I refer, for example, books from my university and therefore those connections are redundant. For developers, there is the source code on the net (Linux operating system).

Conclusion:
Of all the readers of this is the least restricted in access and connectivity. No proprietary software or connections but standards. Mini USB cable may be used by other devices. The 3.5mm audio jack is also standard and the eBooks you just copied to the reader and can create a separate folder structure. Therefore, a strong buy recommendation.

Ps if necessary I can answer questions about comments. In the event that someone has an about features etc.
