About WD access if configured from the Internet is possible. A real "private cloud"
The integrated RAID controller all data is automatically mirrored. In one of the two plates failure no data is lost.
One premised: Although the installation is very simple and the user interface is designed very intuitively, but it needs a bit of understanding of network and storage systems the functionality to understand and be able to use.
An important note at the beginning: The name I find somewhat misleading: 4TB storage are a only available when you turn off the (set by default) Mirror function. Otherwise a net only 2GB are available, simply because as much space is needed for mirroring. Because mirroring now offers even substantial safety and safe is a decision criterion that should be described clearly. Why should I purchase a mirrored system and then do not use the mirror?
Shortly:
+ Easy installation (here: Telekom Speedport, MacBook)
+ Security by mirroring
+ Access and if desired configuration on the Internet
+ Intuitive user interface
+ Two additional USB ports for additional drives (run at all)
+ After connecting direct indication of the shares in the Finder (Mac OS)
+ Built-in media server (Twonky) in prepared releases
+ Simple, but required permissions structure (users / groups / approvals - Full access or read-only)
+ Shares can be configured for different accesses (z. B. FTP or WebDAV)
+ Network Software (WD Discovery Software), the (only the WD My Cloud Mirror Non) is the media server, file servers and routers in the network and can call their respective configuration pages. (Here's the not for MacOS)
+ Automatic backup with Time Machine into the net. The backup directory was up Time Machine found right away.
+ Very well-made support website
+ Prima APP for iPhone
+ Intelligent authorization system for mobile devices (There is a limited TAN generated)
+ All media are reliably detected
+ The music directory appears automatically when released in iTunes
+ DNLA enabled devices detect the media server perfectly (a Sony compact system, a Smart TV here) and it also recognizes the device (although the SONY was not even on - that has worried me a bit)
- Unclear specification to actual available memory
- Admin users by default without password
- WD Discovery software for Windows only (a shame)
- The WD-app links if you are not careful default media files by itself - and can then play back but not.
- Sometimes a little hesitant access time especially for larger data transfers (You can see it on the CPU monitor that the machine groans pretty)
These were the first impressions after the first days of use. Each user has to be clear, that he indeed has a private cloud and the data is stored locally mirrored and safe at home, but a lot of communication via WD goes. Previous conclusion:
An ingenious solution with really good and a well prepared user support through extensive software and a clever website. By mirroring the plate to lock away his precious data loss safe for reasonable money. For private use (and also for very small businesses) made really good!
