~ General:
Many people compare to Super Metroid Other M, and its scenario actually begins where the SNES episode stop. However, in principle, Other M is much closer to a Metroid Fusion: narration longer supported, clearly stated objectives, simplified gameplay but highly efficient.
Some criticize maybe these advances come at the expense of exploration. Indeed, Metroid is not that vast maze where one is lost every 10 minutes. However, you will open your eyes to discover all the secret passages or bonus, if you want to finish the game 100%.
~ Gameplay:
The Ninja team respects the heritage of all its predecessors (2D and 3D components) and offers us the opportunity to switch at any time between a third-person view and a subjective view.
- The gameplay in "2D" allows us to run a heroine who has never been so agile - even feline - and powerful. As before, it is possible to run in the corridors to knock the intergalactic small fry. The controls have also been simplified to the extreme: just the directional pad, a button to shoot and to jump. In fact, the game is very accessible and extremely nervous gameplay. Samus is able to achieve quite easily new shares, as attacks in melee or automatic dodges.
If this simplification of control will require a little time to adapt, I note that it does not come at the expense of the difficulty. Indeed, the mini-boss and boss are quite numerous and will be as clever as you. Do not expect defeat in bourrinant the fire button. Your success will depend largely on your ability to anticipate the movements of the enemy, dodge his attacks and strike back against the right time.
- A subjective view is also offered. It will be necessary to observe the environment, discover some hiding or fire missiles.
The missiles used to inflict great damage to the enemy ... but it's not easy to put into practice since you are especially vulnerable while you turn the wiimote and aim on the screen. However, given that some bosses can not be defeated with missiles, you have to necessarily master this technique.
~ Graphics:
Technically it is above the average for Wii. While it's true that it's dark, but for a game inspired by Alien, it seems rather justified. The cutscenes are simply superb and should you glued to the screen.
In addition, Other M does not deny the past and we will find a happy kitsch bestiary, simple and colorful design.
~ Ambiance:
But it is finally in the mood this episode the most innovative and stands out from the usual productions Nintendo: screenwriting, introduction of secondary characters, atmosphere darker, many cinematic and very well performed (for a period of about 50 minutes!).
The developers have really done a great job to give us a game that borrows some cinematic codes. The Series B and SF fans should be met, especially as the result is quite convincing.
Obviously, this new direction requires artistic choices that may offend some fans of the license. The soundtrack is completely revolutionized and you will have to mourn your classic themes (except one or two exceptions) in favor of a discrete BOtantôt sometimes agonizing, which contributes to player immersion.
~ Life:
With Metroid, display of credits has never been synonymous with END. If you want to finish the game 100%, several hours of additional exploration will be necessary.
Especially that some options should enhance the potential to challenge and replayability for haters of the pad. ;-)
~ Conclusion:
Between tradition and modernity, Other M is a good game that should satisfy both the uninitiated and fans, if only one unprejudiced welcomes innovations of Team Ninja. One who will take a fresh look at this game will discover a game accessible and nervous gameplay and enjoys a good staging.
Without any hesitation, I place it among the best products currently available on Wii and I hope that a result will not be waiting too long. :-)
