LG D821 Google Nexus 5 32GB Contract (Electronics)

Customer Review

First of all: I rate the Garät here and not the (here currently completely covered) price!
(I bought my device in the amount directly from Google for the EIA 399, -., As it was not listed in the store for this time at Amazon)

Here are some impressions / experiences from the first week with the Nexus 5:

1) processing / design:
--------------------------------------
The unit is top in his hand.
The rubberized back and form a whole to ensure that the device optical / haptic comes across really well. The gap dimensions are perfect. Nothing rattles or creaks.
The classic "crumbs crack" between housing edge and the display is almost non-existent.
The housing frame includes exactly flush to the display. Thus, the glass is nowhere on and is not curved, etc. (such as the Galaxy S3)
Only the offset from the center of the housing mounted camera on the back looks standard 1mm from the case back, which means that the phone is not resting to 100% wobble-free on einm table. With extra cover, but this is no longer an issue.
The switches are positioned (for right) exactly where one would suspect also blind.
Overall, for my own personal taste one of the most elegant and wertigsten smartphones from PLASTIC long.
The Nexus 5 is likely to be processed in terms of the long run the first benchmark.
(Who even more significance in the design wants and want to stay with Android, then possibly should engage in aluminum for HTC One.)

2) Screen:
--------------------------------------
The IPS display has very pleasant viewing angle.
In direct comparison to mobile phones with Super AMOLED display (such as the Galaxy S4) I like the clearly more natural colors and really better presented white backgrounds. A bluish or yellowish white, as with Super AMOLED, is not seen here.
The converse is true when displaying black.
Here are mM after the Super AMOLED displays ala Galaxy S4 / Note 3 before built into the Nexus 5 IPS display.
Black type of construction works at the Nexus 5 (especially in the dark), the backlight of the TFT always minimal grayish.

Judging by the benefits in the representation of white, the minimum disadvantages in the representation of black and the overall balance of color display, the screen is but the sum of its properties is one of the best, which is to get at present.
The resolution in full HD is already beyond all doubt.

The automatic brightness control is in the dark to my mind but still too bright.
Here's an update would be desirable, since that display in the dark otherwise very hidden.
Manually it can be the display but easily make pleasant dark.

3) performance CPU / graphics:
--------------------------------------
There can be excellent and hours palaver over benchmark tests and tens of games test. That saves me deliberately.
This can the relevant test sites to much better.
Fact is, this is the quad-core CPU really fast with the built-GPU on the phone.
I have less than a week after use so far can not constitute a single stuttering or perceived inefficiency.
All (Kitkat-compatible) applications and games are almost immediately opened by clicking the respective app.
Games can all be easily gamble in highest settings. Larger tables, documents, etc. are also no problem.
Everything runs silky smooth. Alternative Launcher as the preferred of mine Nova Launcher running like butter.

4) Camera:
--------------------------------------
The camera is not bad, but definitely not a milestone. In HDR + mode can be even with little residual light still passable shoot images without a flash.
The vile LED Light Lightning also tears from no trees in terms of coverage and illumination.
The image results are, in spite of automatic face recognition and adjustable white balance, only upper mediocrity.
Shutter lag and Fokuszierung are also not top notch, but tolerable. Despite continuous focus, the camera produces repeatedly blurred images.
In pure photo mode from the optical image stabilization anyway nothing to remember.
Very good contrast - to my mind - the optical Image Stabilizer works when shooting video.
Here Mobile Phone Video typical Bildruckler be elegant weggefedert of the optics.

Although the new camera app under 4.4 fuktioniert total quickly and easily, but has almost no adjustment.
Good is that (without mod) that can be sound-Leister key used as a trigger from the start.

As currently is rumored on the net, but Google is already tuned to a software update for the camera. We'll see what's there yet rauszuholen.

Last but not least the whole thing is still a phone.
Whoever puts his focus here on a phone with a better photo features, is currently safely operated much better with a Nokia Lumia.
This has visibly better image quality and a real flash.

5) Software:
--------------------------------------
On board, everything Google has to offer. And that in its latest version. This is not to be expected at a Goolge telephone yes differently.
Annoying is, not all apps that you want to install even run that course (still) under 4.4 Kitkat.
Special drawback in my opinion is that I have not yet found a browser that supports the Adobe Flash Player nachinstallierbare App.
So no matter which browser is used (and I've tested to all common / popular browsers), the presentation of web sites with Flash content does not (yet).
Despite Flash player app installed supply under 4.4 all browsers pointing out that an appropriate plug-in for Flash is missing.
As I said, for the phone may be nothing, but here on you should at least be clear.
(But I very much hope that in this regard within the next few weeks which will be done.)

A "must-have app" for the Nexus 5 is the app "Light Flow".
Only with this app the notification LED of the Nexus 5 can truly be meaningful and comprehensive / driven multicolored.
This should install from one of the app stores is necessarily.

6) Battery life:
--------------------------------------
Overall, the battery should be slightly larger for my first impression / need. 2300mAh are not just contemporary and rather meager.
However Deepslepp seems to work very well on the device, so that the battery gets particularly deprived extremely little juice when not in use.
Overnight my device has pulled with activated WLAN per hour with 1% battery. A very good value.
If you use the machine a lot, so the consumption of 4-fired CPU cores makes but also quickly on the battery status noticeable.
How good is the overall performance must be seen in the next few weeks. So far I can say that life is better than I had feared with the little battery.

7) Rooting:
--------------------------------------
Who before has to root their device, this can - as usual for Nexus devices - do easily and quite simple.
A tool which unlocked the bootloader and install root privileges on the device can be for example in "Nexus Root Toolkit" easy find on the net.
The current latest version (1.7.5) of Nexus Root Toolkit Wug`s already supports Nexus 5. This can be child's play - and of course at your own peril - set everything accordingly. The well-known in the scene colleague Chainfire has been one of his CF-Root for the Nexus 5 outside.
Only by root, you have full access to the system and can install both a comprehensive firewall and effective ad blocker.

8) Connectivity:
--------------------------------------
Wi-Fi works on both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz band.
At 5 GHz is a connection with a Fritz box 7390 the displayed connection speed at 150 M / bit.
The 2.4 GHz band, the connection speed is 65 M / bit. WLAN a / c I could not test unfortunately yet.
The Wireless-N Range cuts while the Nexus 5 is not from outstanding!
Compared to eg an old Galaxy S2 no coverage benefits are here to recognize.
On the contrary, where an old Galaxy S2 still has reception, already breaking this off at the Nexus 5.
As early as 2 meters from the Rooter first WLAN signal strength bar will disappear.

LTE I could not test for lack of a suitable SIM currently.

Bluetooth is working properly in all situations I tested.
Both the car kit, the PC, as well as other smartphones combine easily with the Nexus.
Also, the audio streaming via Bluetooth works fine in my car (VW Group).
NFC I have not been able to continue testing.

USB-OTG (USB On-The-Go) so the connection of USB flash drives, USB keyboards etc. works on / with the Nexus 5 as well.
For this, however, paid apps need to be installed. Currently, this inter alia, recommend 2 variants.
So can be set via "Total Commander" + chargeable USB plug from the mobile phone to directly access the connected USB sticks and their contents.
Another app that makes this possible, is the slightly more expensive app "Nexus Media Importer".
Furthermore, of course you need a suitable USB OTG cable, what it for about 1.50 - you can buy 5 depending on the model and manufacturer.
This method can then be extremely simple, large amounts of data on sticks, SD cards etc. outsource, or play directly, without the data must be stored for only on the phone to external USB flash drives stored content (like movies).
A very handy feature, which provides the maximum design space limit on 16 or 32GB remedy.
(But it is important that the connected memory formatted in FAT16 or FAT32!)

9) Telephony:
--------------------------------------
Call quality is good. Interlocutor must be understood loud and clear. At the other end of the line is also good to understand.
Even with the integrated hands-free function can be provided that the Nexus is on the table in front of you easily make calls.
Overall, the connection stability / quality to be very good in the 3G network appears. Here I can notice a significant improvement in contrast for example to a Galaxy S2.
The only drawback (not only in speakerphone mode) is the single speaker to the lower end face.
If you hold the device in landscape mode and accidentally covered the only opening of the speaker can be heard almost no sound.
In the knowledge of it, but a preventable cause.

10) in my opinion meaningful extras / recommendations:
--------------------------------------
- Some good (in-ear) headphones because Google no mitliefert
- A QI induction charging station for wireless charging, eg by Zens:
;s=ce-de&pf_rd_p=417177927&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000698583&pf_rd_m=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&pf_rd_r=0CVMYPX833E9RP7S3G4J
- Screen Protector of Dipos (I personally prefer antireflection):

- A protective sheath, eg of mumbi: (although is not the most elegant, but provides good protection for little money.)
; Qid = 1384261584 & sr = 8-3 & keywords = mumbi + Nexus + 5

First conclusion after almost 1 week with the Nexus 5:
================================================== ====================================
++ Spring Leicht Smartphone with phenomenal price / performance ratio (32GB version for 399, -)
++ Extremely good system / graphics performance, here Android 4.4 brings really anything out of the device
++ Very good display with natural colors and minimal reductions in the representation of black
++ Practical USB OTG support
++ Induction charging (Qi) works great
(++ Very good community for the Nexus 5 in terms of rooting / modding etc ...) *

+ Camera with "room for improvement" - let's see what next software update yet rausholen there. (First Camera-mods are already at XDA-Developers)
+ Good optical image stabilization in video
+ Battery life is okay, but not outstanding

0 Android 4.4 aka "Kitkat" with still many gaps / incompatible apps in the app store (but that's just a matter of time until the changes ...)

(--fehlende Flash support in Android 4.4) *

* Does not direct the device

Note: Currently there is no currently runnable FM radio (possibly comes as something else, the hardware would actually fit), and Spirit FM works currently (still) do not, however, an FM radio is not officially included in the product description ,

So, here is an update after nearly three weeks of Use:
================================================== ====================================
The biggest surprise is that battery life has increased significantly. And a lot more than I usually know it after a few charging cycles for new devices.
With additional installation of energy-saving "Franco-kernel" and the absolutely stable "Cataclysm Rome", the device runs loose even when the display is about 4 hours a day without the need to be afraid that you will be without power. Really extremely well !!!! I would not expect on the basis of first impressions.

The camera shows unsuspected qualities especially in low light and HDR + mode. The low light sensitivity seems to be quite high, so that good images can be shot without flash. Unfortunately, there is still no official Upate for the camera software. So un remains the shutter lag is still moderate.

Otherwise, the device is completely unobtrusive. And that's quite positive meaning. I had previously not only Absturtz or Freeze, let alone any unsolvable problems.
Light flow works perfectly and even larger amounts of data can be played perfectly via USB OTG and an attached USB flash drive.
A really good overall performance !!

I'm curious now how is the long term durability ... So far, just buy it! Rightly in the relevant websites / newspapers one of the best smartphones currently. I can confirm that in "real life".
