This is meant to provide to get along with others of its kind wireless for the whole house.
First, I have only one AP ordered for extensive testing.
I was looking for an AP with:
-Dual-Band Wi-Fi (at the same time)
Stream via PoE
-For ceiling or wall mounting
-at the best white
-Easy administration of multiple APs
I had read myself in the product before and also the ratings saw the extent of good.
The UniFi Controller software I had previously installed on a Windows 8 64-bit system accordingly.
Once the shipment has arrived with me, I have the AP unpacked first and was amazed at the size; He is clearly flatter than the previously tested. Processing seems to be the extent dibasic.
Widely is positive to note that the AP supplied with a power injector for PoE directly beside the mounting kit. (The power injector, however, is not IEEE802.3af / at compatible!)
Then came the start:
AP via network cable to a standard PoE switch (802.3at) connected. Launched UniFi Controller on the computer and after a short wait, the new AP was visible in the web interface and could be assigned. Next, the controller has updated the firmware and my already previously set settings have been active.
Perfect!
The furnishings in the web interface of the controller is really easy to do. There are created and configured in these profiles SSIDs profiles. The profiles are then assigned to the kinds of interfaces (2.4 / 5GHz) of APs. Thus several APs operate using the same settings and reconfigure the same time.
Range?
The AP is on average transmission power and the signal is perfectly adequate for my purposes.
Function?
Have different clients at the AP. These include:
-iPhone & iPad 5GHz
Notebook 2.4GHz
-Wireless Radio 2.4GHz
-Android Phone & Tablet 5 / 2.4GHz
To date, all units will be uninterrupted or other problems.
Although the Controller software is not running does the AP without any problems, but no statistics are collected.
However, small restriction is here the guest account which I still come later.
The AP is still not in use, but so far I am really excited!
I noticed is that the device quite quite warm (not hot) is what also report other. In wall / ceiling mounting which is probably matter but at the installation site should probably be sufficient space for air circulation for cooling. By that I currently can leave flexibility to AP I screwed to the ceiling mount 4 small wooden blocks - so the AP has always 2cm air on the bottom.
In addition to basic functions, there are additional features such as:
1) Zero-handoff
I can not test with a previously AP.
2) Guest Access
Allows very easily provide guest access is separate from the normal network.
For this, ACLs defined the by default ban all private IP ranges. (DHCP and DNS but function)
You can then decide whether or not everyone is allowed to connect or if you
-A password for all uses.
-Vouchers Created for a defined period after the first use / printed / distributed.
-an integrated payment function (untested) uses.
-with an external server is working.
Guest access is then activated when the defined SSIDs per tick, you can leave or encrypt the wireless network open. The variant with voucher works great for me.
Small hooks on this matter is that this feature requires the UniFi Controller. If the controller is offline operate the ACLs still but authentication is bypassed in the case thereby further Internet access is possible.
Here I would want an option to set whether when the controller is unreachable, the access is to be disabled or enabled. (It seems to be a parameter in the configuration file.)
3) 2. Network Port
Allows the operation of another network device behind the AP. Can certainly be handy if you have a few at the installation or too few network cables.
4) coupling the wireless APs
I can not test.
CONCLUSION:
So far, I can only recommend the device!
Will I still think about whether I want to have a permanently running controller or not. Possibly I test the first with AWS.
Update 1:
Have the AP now run on a controller based on Ubuntu 14.10. There's something for hobbyists in addition to the stable versions, so-called Rapid and Beta releases. Here new features are already available then, such as a timer for SSIDs.
Installation on Ubuntu is actually very easy.
Am still satisfied!
Update 2:
Am basically satisfied but still noticed as in other reviews support the AP (or the software?) Is currently in Germany in the 5 GHz band only 4 channels a 20 MHz (36 to 48), as only one if you want to use 80MHz channel width. Especially if you wish to use multiple APs is not so great and makes the advantage of the 5GHz band to use more separate frequency bands to naught.
