Infinitely Brel (CD)

Customer Review

Difficult to advise a reference disc in the work of Jacques Brel. For an artist of this level, buying an integral seems a must. However, the most objective auditors admit the heterogeneity of the Belgian directory, where monumental songs alongside big failures (confess that the first part of career is painful to listen to, and some trifles scout does not have much to do with the later masterpieces). Even "Les Marquises" farewell discography Brel, regarded as the Everest of his work, has its share of mediocrity (The Flamingants, The Lion, The ramparts of Warsaw). So we will look at this compilation, "Brel infinitely", released in 2003 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the death of Grand Jacques. Disc 1 opens with "The Quest", a true profession of faith where Brel expresses his philosophy: always try, taking risks, living dangerously ... Line of conduct it has always applied to the letter (he was a singer, actor , director, aviator, browser). From the beach 2, the opportunity has finally given us to discover the five famous novel that Brel recorded in 1977, but which were not selected in the album "Les Marquises" long and fanned the curiosity of fans. These securities are nevertheless of a high level: "Mai 40" (remember the war and the exodus saw the Belgian side), "The Cathedral" (Allegory of the last trip, where Brel evokes his boat and stops), " Love is dead "(everyday hatred of an old couple)," Gracefully "(confession of a man who departs from his youth)," Without requirements "(lament of an abandoned lover). Then the disk continues as a flashback, offering four wonderful excerpts from "Marquesas" (The city slept, Jojo, Orly and the title track). Elsewhere, we find the great classics of the era when Jacques Brel inflamed the Olympia of "Amsterdam" to "Those people", through "Do not leave me," "Matilda" and "Jef" , the key is there. We even discovered throughout this double album of lesser-known pearls (childhood, I am a summer night, We need to look). Obviously, there are omissions (Rosa, The toros, Windows, Desperate, The Fanette). But this record is more than a compilation: it allows for a non-chronological journey through the repertoire of Brel through this its best. Moreover, it remains the only way to gain his last five recorded songs (formerly unpublished), which completes the loop of a colossal work ...
