Updates luck, DLNA rudimentary

Technisat TechniBox S1 + digital HDTV satellite receiver (HDMI, DVRready, CI +, UPnP, USB, incl. HD + card) (Electronics)

Customer Review

After my negative experience with the Volksbox Essential (see my review here), I opted for this device from TechniSat to replace my 50 receiver, I had bought a few years ago here at Amazon and can also HD + receive. The DLNA capability was also a further reason to buy, because I so easily could be controlled through the receiver my NAS and no longer my BDP use it would have ... so was the plan.

The device was delivered very quickly. Unpacking and setting up turned out to be simple and straightforward (except for the somewhat clunky power adapter, which is a bit cumbersome but squeeze through by a cabinet rear wall;)) and the decor was done quite fast.

At least until the point "Software Update" in the installation wizard.

The update channel was permanently found the signal strength and quality very well (92 / 9,5dB) and the progress bar filling up quickly. Until he stopped at 95% and had not changed even after 2 hours.

I broke then, a bit annoyed, the update process and will fully introduced the next step in the installation Receiver: SFI update.

Again, the update channel is found quickly, the update started fix, the progress bar filled up to 22% .. and then moved over one hour a millimeter. Both updates no crash was before! The unit responded with no problems for a key press, only updates refused to accept the device.

So I broke off also this update process and delighted me to the charged previously ISIPRO transmitters.

On the positive side, the switching time is also here pretty neat. Channels are changed as fast as you can press the buttons. Until the picture and sound appears, it takes 1-2 seconds, which is bearable. The EPG also works reliably (without SFI), or similar HbbTV there is not any.

Also an update only via DVB-S or USB is possible. Updates via the Internet are not provided here, in spite of networking.

I wanted then so my test for years with Xbox 360, PS3, Sony / LG / Panasonic BDP, Samsung SmartTV and various Win7 / 8 tablets, laptops and PCs functioning NAS including Twonky server.

But surprise, surprise: even that did not work. The NAS was not found by the TechniBox that Windows devices but already and also directly connected via USB sticks / hard disks. Even switching the NAS of Twonky UPnP brought here no success, thus the DLNA function is useless for me. When I first boot up a PC / notebook / tablet and then me via screen keyboard must register via the receiver's remote control it to view media files, I do not need an extra receiver because then extends a longer HDMI cable ...

Well, so I was able to pinch still alive, especially as there are on the TechniSat homepage also a nice software (beta), with which you can at PC rearrange the station lists (exemplary, although some functions have to be revised. But ists for indeed a beta version;)). The PCs find the receiver properly, the sort channel also works quite well and I was finally again inclined to make the updates of software and SFI again.

It may well be that any atmospheric disturbances or other adversities verhidnerten the initial update process.

So get into the menu (navigation is fast, but does not look appealing), update channel sought and found, it is (and so old / new version, signal strength of the update channel) also update all displayed quickly and accurately and enthusiastically to "now "pressed ....

More than these points, and the message "Waiting for data from DVB-S" I did not get to see. For over an hour not. So I broke off also this software update, set the timer so that it will attract the night update and updated SFI for the sorted of mine station.

Throughout this process, I developed a slight aversion to the number "22", because as I previously was the SFI update at exactly 22% hang. The update time of 30 (screen) or 90 (manual) minutes changed to 22% also nothing.

So here, too: embarrassed update via timer in the night and wait.

For the receiver (logical) must, however, depend on the power grid. He does not have to be switched on, but without standby no update. So I would have if necessary even can still live, even if that means that one for x minutes / hours per week can not watch TV whenever you want, unless you waived updates or shifts the time every time. Because during the update process, no TV reception is possible.

This is quite common, however, when already an update time in hours field is estimated by the manufacturer, which it will not even work at the times that you select yourself, that's sad - and at this price almost insolent.

So I waited to see what the timer updates bring.

In short, they have achieved nothing. None of the scheduled update has been successfully performed, in spite of three hours distance at the start time of the updates.

The device has been repackaged and sent back to Amazon. Here, as in my review for Volksbox Essential applies: I'm staying for the time being with my slow but reliable smart receiver that wudnerbar get along with updates via satellite and also not permanent must depend on power grid to function.

If anyone knows a functioning, uncomplicated and attractively priced DVB-S receiver, he should report.
