I own this lens for about 5 years and have photographed until recently with my old analog Canon EOS 500N. Was due to the zoom range and I am so far very satisfied. The sharpness is great! I recently digital photography expire and the EOS 1D Mark III got myself. I was inconclusive whether I should redeem this lens against the 17-40 / 4L USM, because I virtually the wide angle is cut by the crop factor 1.3. After a few days testing the 28-135'er I'm come to the conclusion that I'm going to keep it. I must confess that the wide angle is not so much lack. On The Contrary; now I have a nice telephoto range up to 175mm. And I just put a high value on clarity and resolution for portraits, which will be my 28-135er almost "eggs Wollmilchsau".
A few more words for processing: Look and feel are my Eighth on almost the same level as the L-series of Canon. The lens has for the EOS 1D a perfect weight and the rings for focus and focal length are excellent workmanship and function after years still properly. Previous speakers I have to agree the tube, however, when it comes to rattling. However, do not bother me really and centering seems not to suffer under it.
All in all a top lens at a very good price / performance ratio. A little tip: direct the lens hood (EW-78B) with this purchase.
