I bought this camera before buying a D800E (in both cases in balance) and I do not regret my purchase even if the D810 has many improvements (shutter quieter and less vibration, better battery life, better autofocus - that of the D4S, high speed video, faster burst fashion ...).
The D800 provides excellent image quality. Of course, use RAW mode to enjoy the 14bits range of light as well as use the filter "optimized sharpness" Photoshop to reduce the attenuation of micro-contrast provided by the anti-moiré filter D800. If we do so, we significantly reduced the gap between the sharpness D800 and D800E.
The comparative test (D810 vs D800) in TechRadar, shows a much greater range of light above 400iso for D800 (about 2ev).
Similarly, if the disadvantage of the filter is to reduce the sharpness, it also reduces visible noise at high sensitivity, making it an excellent device for portraits indoors.
Of course, to enjoy the 36Mpixels sensor, choose high resolution objectives but we can reduce the bill by choosing the AF-S f / 1.8 Nikon G whose value for money is excellent and that are sometimes better than Versions f / 1.4.
The main change, when we discovered the images produced is that the depth of field is much smaller than what we used to do with sensors with fewer pixels, or with silver (even digitized with a Nikon scanner 63Mpixels).
It will pay more attention to the development, as well as camera shake and use higher speeds or place the unit on a good carbon tripod.
The AF problem that had been seen at the output of the device is solved long ago and I have not found with purchased boxes. That said, the requirement for precise focusing is such that it is something to do with care.
Once we incorporated these advantages and disadvantages, the use of this camera is a pleasure. And for my part, I had never made images of such technical quality.
Note: be careful if you buy a used device released in early production. The first models had autofocus errors that could be significant depending on the lens used.
This problem was largely solved later or a return to the Nikon service.
Beware also of number of views already made and the dust of the unit and the sensor.
