I am ambitious amateur photographer, I have the 50mm f / 1.8 II and the f / 1.4 on both the Canon EOS 60D as used the 6D and want to make known hereafter my experience with this lens.
Processing:
The Canon EF 50mm f / 1.4 is processed very solid - there is indeed a high proportion of plastic, but feels just compared to likewise made of plastic 50mm f / 1.8 II quite high on. The bayonet connection is highly resistant metal, and so unlike his cheap little brother. The focus ring is not unlike other lenses from Canon rubberized, but is still a very good grip. When focusing the Plastiktubus advances. To protect this mechanism, you should unscrew a Gegenlichblende during transport. The AF / MF switch appears quite solid, but not exceptional quality.
Operation:
With this lens you can not go far wrong actually - there are only the switch for AF / MF and the focus ring. In my model, it seems almost as if grind of focus ring when the manual focus slightly - focuses the lens automatically, it does very quickly, accurately, and quietly, USM goodness. Although the auto focus is activated, you can bypass this manually at any time and focus manually.
Image quality and autofocus:
To be honest - who the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II calls his own, and in which the image quality is right, who does not need this lens actually. The difference between the two lenses can be hard to see on images. Only those who look closely, recognizes differences in bokeh. The additional diaphragm blades at f / 1.4 then make it noticeable. At full aperture the images actually look a bit soft, here is sharpening in Lightroom or similar necessary. Shows you off, the image quality visibly improves. I shoot mostly with Aperture 2.8 or 3.2, here agree both sharpness and depth of field.
The autofocus is sitting actually (almost) always right. There seldom reason to complain. Was on the 60D and 6D this lens is actually my "always on it."
On Crop sensor, this lens is a very good choice when it comes to portraits. Through the crop factor of 1.6 to get to a focal length of 80mm - in this focal length, it is almost no distortion of the face.
On full-frame 50mm correspond actually 50mm - so more suitable conditions for portraits. In return, 50mm suitable for any other additional everyday situation. Especially in low light situations makes this lens with its high light intensity in connection with the full-frame sensor from its full strength.
Conclusion:
50mm are particularly suitable for (also advanced) beginners in photography, like me. Especially at full frame 50mm correspond to what the human eye perceives and force the photographer thus intensively with the motive to grips - just because of the lack of zoom. On Crop suitable 50mm very good for portraits.
Who needs to pay attention to his wallet or wants, or is not yet sure if he photography the right hobby for him or her, which should pick up the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8. For the price of about 100 here vote imaging performance and bokeh.
Who instead, like myself, a little more brightness would be for better processing and longing, which is the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.4 is recommended. It feels much more significant to focused quieter and provides a finer, softer Bokeh.
I would recommend the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.4 recommended in any case fully.
