First of all, the first impression:
The unit is remarkably compact. Because the printer is limited to a maximum print size of 10x15er photos, the dimensions are quite small, not much bigger than a thick book. The existing plastic housing with a matte finish makes a very sophisticated look and also provides as the rest of processing no cause for criticism. The top is dominated by the color display and the control elements whose meaning is self-explanatory. To operate a package of toner cartridge and special paper is required (not included). The cassette is pushed laterally into the housing while the tray is attached to the front feeder.
The device has an SD card slot, and a USB and mini USB port. In addition, WLAN is integrated into the device, the printer can also act as an access point. Only Wifi Direct printing is not supported by the device, which meant that my Wi-Fi enabled camera (Samsung NX 300) does not read persuade them to print via WLAN.
The power of the printer works via an external power supply and optionally even a battery, which still has to be purchased with costs.
In terms of processing and equipment of the Selphy therefore provides no cause for criticism and the price seems reasonable.
Handling:
Operation is no mystery and a look at the manual you do not have really throw. The display can be tilted and easy to read and the images selected to print just goes out of hand. In the menu some parameters such as color palette, image enhancer or surface finish can be selected (matt / glossy) of photos. These then apply to the entire printing and the printing from external computers / smartphones. Canon offers a smartphone app, which enables trouble-free printing of smartphones, however, the printing parameters can not influence.
In operation, the device requires in relation to the compact size quite a large footprint, on the one hand the paper tray is attached to the front and the printer on the other hand completely pushes out the paper at the back, which should be taken into account.
Small drawback was the lack of WiFi Direct also print option. If you want to print from its camera via WiFi should definitely check the compatibility in advance.
The print speed is just over one minute per photo pretty low, but this is due to the fact that the printer the paper several times in the colors yellow, blue, magenta and printed finalisers this is the way both glossy and matte photos on the same paper to print very well.
Image Quality:
While some buyers had problems with vertical lines on the printouts, so this did not occur in my copy. The photos had a good, natural color reproduction and were nice contrast. They were developed by online services pictures pictures in every way. The existing equipment in the image optimizer intensified the color rendering a little, but otherwise had little impact on the photos and fell only at very close inspection. The situation was different in the choice of interface options. Matte photos were truly matt and glossy pictures corresponding shiny, just like in developed images. I was surprised at the quality aboslut. A printed on photo paper image of my ink jet printer had much worse in direct comparison.
Printing costs:
Where light as well as shadows and these are the printing costs. Although the purchase price of the device is acceptable, but the photos are about 30 cents per picture when using the large packs not cheap, considering that an online service representative deduction will cost less than 10 cents and a comparable quality has. The charm of the Selphy is in contrast to the immediate availability of the pictures and the direct use possibility. Here you have to consider as a buyer, whether one is the price per photo willing to pay. However, there are also situations where the immediate availability of the photos is the decisive advantage and then again one is also willing to pay more. In these situations, I set the printer also mainly.
Conclusion:
I have come to appreciate the Selphy. Just career I have always been situations in which photos must be printed directly and here the unit shows its strengths fully. Here are also the higher printing costs rather of secondary importance. The image quality is virtually indistinguishable from lab photos and printer operation very easy and intuitive. Equipped with all necessary interfaces and Wi-Fi is extensive and it could be both PCs as well as smartphones, USB sticks etc. easily connect to the Selphy.
Besides the somewhat high cost of printing, I would have just as desired feature WiFi Direct Print, but I can forgive a clear conscience just 5 star. Who stock (on the go) would have 10x15 prints and the higher cost of printing is not afraid, should include the Selphy necessarily in the buying decision.
