To a small home network set up I wanted absolutely a router with min. two USB ports, at best even USB3.0! Having never had a ASUS in operation and I wanted to test this time of AC56U and the RT-N65U were shortlisted. The latter even offers two USB3.0 ports, but because of the poorer for me Connections position (side of the unit), I have decided for the AC56U. This is more pleasant designed from the ground. In addition, it offers the next WLAN standard "AC" I however can not be used because no device supports this feature. However, I have bought with a view to the next generation.
I thus had to make compromises with the USB ports, the AC56U has a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 port.
Now about the device itself:
Positive I feel the look. Fits well with me. The router is visible positioned with me, the blue status LED's but I feel as not disturbing because they are not too bright.
The connectors are located at the bottom of the device, thus run straight down (not visible) behind a cabinet. The stand would have probably. can do differently to get a consistent line on the front page, but does not bother me.
Commissioning:
The router was set up quickly and the initial configuration was fast over a network cable. After activating the Wi-Fi I have made the rest of the configuration comfort of your sofa.
The router menu is structured clearly structured, I found myself the same deal. About the default settings (WLAN, firewall) I then came quickly to the USB port.
I currently have a 2.5 "USB3.0 hard drive in operation, the other port is still a 3.5" has USB2.0 hard disk (for backup).
The hard drive was recognized immediately and I was able to search for and select the same as a network drive on the laptop. The next, important for me to point was to be able to control the hard drive with my RaspberryPi! This also went smoothly. Now I can watch my media files from my "NAS" comfortably on TV. All files were reproduced clearly and without jerking / delays.
The router provides a lot of additional features, which I do not yet all could try. This I will also grudge here after extensive testing.
Among other things, including counting the 5G band, more USB / server capabilities and the drive from the Internet.
For data transfer from your laptop via WLAN ext. Hard drive I can say the following date: moved a file for testing, size approx 13GB, Duration: approx 30min. Moving files but I will test it again extensively.
WLAN Speed Test have reached the maximum. So full power.
If it is still of interest to someone in which provider I am: KabelBW with a 32-line
Should I have something forgot, I will of course still supply later. Otherwise, I can only say: 5 *
