Filling with small files takes forever. So this device is not for use as a data store for me.
For example, my copy of the Gutenberg Project consists of approximately 60,000 HTML files, each 2 kB. When I copying (Windows XP -> My Cloud EX2) have completed over the network (Fritzbox 7390) after a night out, the remaining copying time stood at 330 days (!). The same picture in the experimental data transfer via FTP. The direct connection of a USB hard drive to the NAS did not help; Here copying simply broke off after a few minutes with the lapidary reference to an "error". (Information, where the mistake is, WD keeps apparently superfluous.)
The reason for this problem lies not in slow disks, not the slow network and not in the file system. But it is - probably - in two processes called "wdmcserver" and "wdphotodbmerger" that run with consistently when storing and holding the CPU in my NAS with a permanent occupancy of 99% under steam. These two processes are believed to be the index creation and the generation of thumbnails (which I do not need both). On the Internet you learn that there are so trouble for months; WD knows the problem, but has not solved until now.
A normal shutdown of these processes through the user interface is not provided by WD. Probably could they access via SSH somehow shut down. But who wants to enable SSH, which is pointed out right from WD, that it can lead to the loss of the guarantee by itself if you use SSH, "to change the device outside the normal operation". I do not know what WD does "normal operation"; but before I risked anything here, I admit that for me useless device rather back. (Moreover, it goes against my grain to a device that is sold as "ready", far from having to tinker.)
Now for the evaluation: I evaluate not what could be if everything would be good, but that which is just. So the firmware 1:02:08 and the state from 04.29.2014, when I finally decide after several days of futile attempts memory to return the device. Definitely one could manage with My Cloud EX2 movies and photos quite well as well with any other NAS also. It has also not any so many so small files as I do. But as the data store, as I want to use it, it is good not just in this state. The 3 star that I still forgive it, are already generously ...
