24 Nights (Live from the Royal Albert Hall) (Audio CD)

Customer Review

This double-CD (the title is a play on his live album "Just One Night" of 1980), recorded in early 1990 and early 1991, Eric Clapton turned his versatility. It is divided into four sections: 4 Piece band, blues band, 9 Piece band and Orchestra. Except for the blues recordings he was doing throughout accompanied by his now proven "4 Piece Band": Greg Phillinganes (keyboards & vocals), Nathan East (bass & vocals) and Steve Ferrone (drums). The focus of selection was on old Cream hit and his then current album "Journeyman".

The illustrations got a certain Peter Blake, who had already been responsible for the cover of Sgt. Pepper's and would the cover of Oasis' "Stop the Clocks" design of 2006. The accompanying text gave Derek Taylor, formerly press spokesman etc. for the Beatles and the Byrds active.

It was only appropriate that Eric's 4-man band stripped down right at the beginning, but punchy and inspired (Badge, White Room) and even a little playful versions (Sunshine Of Your Love) said Cream-handed in title; Running on Faith would a year later appear on the third Eric Clapton album (on "Unplugged") in a row (the soundtrack "Rush" times do not count), as well as Old Love, which made Eric's appreciation for these songs to express.

The Blues Band played among others Buddy Guy (g), Robert Cray (g), Johnnie Johnson (p, from Chuck Berry Trio) and drummer Eric from his seventies band, Jamie Oldaker. Despite this illustrious line the blues recordings sound largely anemic; not even Johnnie Johnson's piano solo, it may rip out. I would versions "maintained", but that should not necessarily be blues. Watch yourself acts still refreshingly unrehearsed, but just Have you ever loved a woman is the most boring and leidenschaftsloseste official from all of Eric's versions. For the Blues department there is also a point deduction.

With the 9 Piece Band (increased by Chuck Leavell (keyb), Phil Palmer (g), Ray Cooper (perc) and Katie Kissoon and Tessa Niles (b-voc)) specifies Eric then really took off: Pretending is a whole class better than on "Journeyman"; Bad Love recalls in reef and build more than just remove the version of Badge to the CD input. (Who wants to hear more of this line resp. To see whether the "Knebworth" CD (Before you accuse me, tearin 'us apart) or DVD (Sunshine Of Your Love) directed.)

From here it is then contemplative: the almost three ten-minute version of Old Love (in the vinyl version shortened to just over half) thanks to their dynamism and their almost lyrical instrumental passages is never boring. Wonderful tonight (released as a CD single on Edit and click "Chronicles") developed over 9 minutes of playing time (at-) spherical qualities.

From the orchestra department (led by Michael Kamen) I would have still wanted a little more varied song selection. After all, the orchestration of Bell Bottom Blues creates an attractive compensation for something missing compared to the original version of the fire. From Hard Times you could have done a bit more. Edge of Darkness (out of a movie or a television show) is not as well known, something to listen, with a grandiose finale.

Digital production (DDD) gives the record dynamics, a transparent sound and sufficient pressure; and Eric has not let it take, be noted that all recordings have remained untouched: "No fixes, no overdubs." "24 Nights" is a very entertaining, varied and good sounding live recording that makes me always fun (I find the End-eighties keyboards are here slowly appropriately referenced in their place). I have seen Eric Clapton on 03/05/1990 at the Festhalle and would have been happy if he had placed on this CD a few more tracks from these concerts like Can not Find My Way Home or Layla. On Maxi-CD appeared additionally: Layla (Band intro), Cocaine, No Alibis and I shot the Sheriff; the album should be reissued, I would like to see these 4 titles also as bonus tracks.

Accompanying this album the same name DVD is published; However, the songs Badge and Hoodoo missing on her Man.
