Contacts and Calendars can be wonderful with the (paid) Additional software synchronize "Companion Link"; locally and with Outlook! That was very important to me. Even the profile pictures of the Outlook contacts come to the phone.
GPS reception even in the house possible, though usually with poor spatial resolution. Despite clear evidence of the quality of the receiver.
The integration of Google Maps and the possibilities about "What's Nearby" quickly to get an overview is very well done.
Bluetooth pairing my BMW 3 Series was not a problem.
My old Windows Mobile 6.5 has the car phone numbers and addresses transmitted (practically at full integration into Navi). However, the Defy transmits only the numbers (several per contact also possible) without the addresses. The list in the car is now sorted by first name / surname. Not so nice, but maybe I'll find this to somewhere a setting option. For the list of contacts in the phone, there was the.
The sound via headphones (I use a Koss "Porta Pro") is really good and is an iPod to nothing after. The built-in FM Radio (need it?) Also works with the foreign headphones properly. I have just ordered a 32GB memory card, and will be in future the iPod at home.
The built-in speaker can be "loud"! Much louder than it could manage my old HTC Touch 2. In order for the Defy would be usable as an alarm clock, which definitely was not the case with the old phone.
Conclusion: As an absolute Android novice I found myself surprisingly quickly master. I am very impressed by the speed and quality of the device. And you can make calls even!
Addendum (December 2011):
I was hiking in Tenerife. With MyTracks the tours were very good co-written, even without that the data function (expensive abroad) was active. In the hotel, I then can load the appropriate maps and satellite images to WLAN. The only major deviation of the GPS data I had on shutdown by the Teide in the cable car - next to part a few hundred meters metal roof plus ridge were too much for the GPS receiver and the waypoints were. The ascent on foot but was recorded with good accuracy.
After the holiday caught even me the update problem: The Version 2.3.6 Motorola's automatic updater installed had no mobile network data connection more. Motorola's hotline took five days to the failure to analyze and recommend me to replace the SIM card - from 25.12. until 30.12 - not too bad, was finally Christmas! I had already ordered a new card due to tips from the Internet. The replacement of the old 5V SIM card (after all, arise from the 90s) by a 1.8V current map helped. The card replacement made the Telekom for free to my delight.
Positive side effect: The mobile phone used with the 1.8V SIM card much less power! After 17 hours, are currently 80% battery capacity is available - there was with the old SIM display already below 50%. I'm curious how long the Defy + hold out now ... 48 hours there were up to 15% limit, despite New Year SMS New Year and phone calls.
Addendum (February 2012):
Meanwhile, I have also tethering via USB (passing the Internet connection to another computer) tried (with Windows7): Connect the cable, activate the setup of the Defy + USB tethering and already surfing the laptop via 3G + with 5000kbit / s / 380kbit / s. Not quite as fixed as my DSL16000 connection, but mobile.
Again for perseverance: When you make a call and not a lot of Bluetooth is just the battery for 4 days.
The display also looks after 4 months as it did on the first day. I can not find a single scratch.
In my view, useful apps: Hide Caller ID (79 cents), Titanium Backup, Gauge Battery Wizzard
"Companion Link" gave me some addresses in the meantime broken. Now it works but apparently properly. There is also free software for USB synchronization; whether what is good, but I do not know unfortunately.
Conclusion after 4 months: Great phone with a lot of play value!
