As suggested coverage, Savage Dragon has not completely disappeared. He finds himself in the ship alien with green skin with a crest on the head and his subjects call him Emperor Kurr (including his son and daughter). He finds even Darklord, one of his bitterest enemies. The explanation is complicated and overwhelming. It will take him a little time to do it. On Earth, Malcolm continues to be exposed with the guy from high school and Tierra (Malcolm's girlfriend) realizes that it's not easy to go out with a superhero. Angel Murphy is slowly recovering from his injuries, but can count on the support of Frank Darling. And the corpse of Osama bin Laden appears to still harbor some kind of life.
For these events, Erik Larsen is in great shape. It starts with a full-page close-up on the face of Dragon wondering where he is, it continues with a double spaceship on starry background of the page, then the player enters the explanations between Dragon, its offspring (somehow ) and Darklord. To explain the behavior of that turnaround, Larsen uses an analogy based on days of the week, quite convincingly. It allows him to change reference system and give an explanation that holds up. Larsen then embarks on an adventure parody Flash Gordon, very tasty. The Dragon with his caricature morphology (width huge shoulders, narrow waist) did a great hero of retro science fiction adventures, with its beautiful red T-shirt (he just a planet like badge, instead of a flash ). And as usual, Larsen also shows outwit devious behavior because the Savage Dragon does not correspond at all to what his people expected of him. It must be said, among other things, that Lorella is really curvy.
On Earth, Larsen unleashed even more than in space. Malcolm gradually becomes aware that his strength creates as many problems it helps to solve, especially when a fight against Overlord destroyed his residential area. And then come fight of the century: Malcolm against the irradiated body and enlarged Osama bin Laden. This is huge. Larsen found exactly the right tone of parody to transform this joke of questionable taste in a delicious parody of superhero comics at a discount, and politically incorrect. It's simple: Frank Miller should have sought his advice before going out Holy Terror. We have the right to radiation to bizarre and outlandish consequences, tidal wave that destroys coastal constructions and the deformed hand coming out of the water, announcing the appearance of the monster. Combat is brutal and basic, the triumph heroes, America is saved! Malcolm and Angel enhance their popularity. Easy: in one episode, Larsen parodied movies monsters 1950s parodied comics of the 1960s, caricatured the tone of triumphant America, all in a self-deprecating irresistible atmosphere. And wait to see what he has planned for the second half of Volume: the invasion mentioned in the title, with destruction strength and moult casualties. Every superhero must mobilize to save the human race, with Daredevil (Bart Hill), Dart (Alison Summers), Hercules Invincible Kill-Cat & Kid Avenger, Spawn, Mighty Man, Madman, Shadowhawk, Witchblade, etc.
What there is of good with this series is that Larsen does not skimp on the means. It is in sole command of his series, and it can destroy the Earth both a city or continent by continent, it is no problem. It is able to generate the same energy to that of Kirby in his drawings battles (but without the Kirby textures). There is a logic in the course of the fighting, it is not simply a question of juxtaposed squares in which it is difficult for the reader to restore movement. There is always a parody of background that never takes over the first stage of the story, but that can appreciate these larger than life adventures for pure entertainment they really are. Only a little too many shots on the little Angel panty that is really in poor taste.
With this volume, Larsen is at his best to invent ever new adventures, to give free rein to his imagination. It builds a story taking in which Savage Dragon back without much success to find its place, while causing maximum damage. On Earth, the children continue to grow while facing the perils whose intensity is increasing. It blows a wind of change dehorners the most cautious players, and colossal challenges.
