I think more on theory 1, because there are some watches in our family who remain or not-are supported, to feel unappreciated and unnecessary and are easy for non-presence (if we are in vacation); o). Real!

For my needs the winder could be better / thicker padding. The contact surface is underlaid with a paper-thin pseudo-velvet / -felt. In general, the housing is very light and made of thin plastic.

The device is in operation (ie it rotates) quietly. About as loud as a cassette player, rear idle, so the last minute, when nothing more is on the tape on it.
On the bedside table I would not but ask me. I like already no ticking / luminous alarm - the sleep hygiene due; o).
