Compared with the simple Videomic (by the way there is a directional microphone) is built the newer Videomic Pro significantly smaller. Technically sound, both models deliver more or less the same performance, you can increase to +20 in Pro but the db, yielding more distant noise sources significantly strengthened (louder and better listening). The VideoMic can be only between 0 and -20dB adjust (the Pro goes in negative territory again only to -10dB). Those who want to leave the Videomic on the camera and do not want to work with BoomPole and Co., which was seen as rather resort to Pro version. Unfortunately, it is troublesome at normal Videomic through the structure to adjust the db-control. The menu is built so small and hidden that I need a pair of tweezers or similar here. That bothers me the most on this model! The VideoMic is also (like many micros) Battery operated (9V batteries), which you should also take into account (where the consumption but is quite easy to deal with). Rode provides otherwise, as usual, a 10 years warranty (but only if you register on their website).
By the way: Canon 7D now coincides with the Firmware Update 2.0 finally the absurd problem of audio automatic way (down the volume automatically leveled originally at this camera with the ambient noise with, whereby external mics were strictly without special additional unusable). The audio signal can be leveled manually thanks Update. Not displayed during recording is one of the levels - but only before the actual video recording and not during.
CONCLUSION: Solid directional microphone to a thoroughly gratifying price and with 10 year warranty, if you want to register with Rode. Too much can you look at the sound did not expect, but what is offered was fine with me. Those who want to leave the Videomic but always fixed on the camera, probably served much better with the Pro version from the above mentioned reasons.
