The SX40HS is a bridge camera with super zoom, ie a mixture of the characteristics of several types of cameras.
Compact camera: With approximately 600 grams lighter than an SLR especially since the objective is already included in this figure. The in education or transport position compact (short) lens ensures that the camera can even fit in a larger pocket. The image sensor is significantly smaller than a SLR. This makes for a huge at 840mm focal length (mm camera equivalent) compact and lightweight design. The noise is due to physical reasons for the sensor size obviously higher than the full-frame sensor of the SLR. Overall, however, it is recommended if you do not exceed the ISO-value 800.
SLR: a mirror, there is not self-evident. He would also make the camera heavier and slower. The case is similar to the appearance of a small SLR and grip than that of a compact camera. Due to the higher weight and the size of the SX40 is also better balanced if, for example installing a flash. This is especially true for the small Speedlite 270 EX (II). The larger and significantly heavier Speedlite 430 EX II makes the camera a bit "top heavy". Ever differentiates the hot shoe for an external flash, the SX40 from a compact camera beneficial. The internal flash is least available. Bounce flash does not work here, however.
The SX40 is, if you like Canon operating concept and menu navigation, very clearly and logically operated with many well-functioning programs or more easily usable in automatic mode. The latter also works well beginners. It is also a manual mode. When Megazoom when easily the overview in the picture loses and no longer finds the object, can quickly and reproducibly, the zoom can be reduced and all the starting position then back again.
Too bad that can not be photographed in RAW mode. GPS also missing.
Positive is the strong battery, which allows you to spend a photo tag already.
The images are balanced, well exposed and color fidelity. The recordings succeed consistently. The resolution / sharpness is slightly less than that of a SLR Canon 600D. This, however, is considerably more expensive than the SX 40 HS. The Megazoom (x35 !!) makes shooting possible so otherwise would not exist because one simply does not reach the object close enough. It is impressive, even if you do not need every day in full. The very well-working image stabilization also makes handheld shooting at full zoom readily possible. The enormous wide angle at the short end is as easily forgotten. It's (almost) even more practical.
The video recording in Full HD look very good and are under pressure from an instantly recognizable red button at any time be started. You can also zoom in well and the focus moves with. That's just at SLRs often a problem when filming. Not here. The slow motion in VGA resolution has what. With calmer environment zooming is slightly audible.
A camera that can do almost anything, and very good! An external flash you should not indulge. And if you're not a professional, you have everything you need.
PS I have some photos set, showing what the Megazoom can afford (just put out of your hands. No tripod !!) above the mid-range photo.
